My participation in the #SMARP Contest - Round #292: A few reflections before heading to class! [Eng/Esp]
Greetings once again to the Shadow Hunters community! A week of October has already passed, and I’ve struggled to make headway on my to-do list—including grading midterms and reports. The worst part awaits at the end of the month: I have to serve on a bachelor's thesis defense panel, so I really need to manage my time better! But first, I have to get my teaching responsibilities in order. You see, even though I’d finished my official teaching load and should have been "free" from classroom duties, I was invited to teach at another university and simply couldn't say no. So, here I am, preparing to teach once again—this time at the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC).
I rushed to catch the transport that dropped me off right in front of the Institute's legendary Marcel Roche Library. Memories inevitably came flooding back—all those times I had to go up there to find and read hundreds of scientific articles right on the spot: Nature, Science, the Journal of Biochemistry, and the Journal of Periodontology. I would spend entire mornings and afternoons trying to read every article I could get my hands on to support my postgraduate thesis. Those were days before I had internet access, so I had no choice but to make constant trips to this place. But if there’s one thing I always remember about this building, it’s the magnificent entrance, with its glass doors and the two plaques commemorating its construction. That’s where I found the perfect opportunity to capture the reflections I wanted to share with you for this SMARP contest—specifically round #292.
Let’s start by describing the scene just as I stepped off the bus; the initial reflections reveal a group of students who happened to be waiting for me to begin class. They were full of the kind of enthusiasm that is inevitable when you are 18 or 19 and just starting your degree program. I asked them to wait a moment so I could take some photos before we began; I wanted to head toward the entrance, where large glass doors and windows—framed in gleaming metal—instantly give you the feeling that you are entering a place of great solemnity. As you can see, despite being transparent, these massive windows create a strong, almost mirror-like reflection due to the outdoor lighting, mirroring the institute's spacious parking lot.
Yet, despite what the reflections in those main doors revealed, the image I liked best came from the windows flanking the glass doors. They were just as reflective, but in this instance, they mirrored the institute's green spaces—unlike the previous view, which showed the asphalt of the parking lot and the parked buses. Since each window section is separated by metal frames, the reflected landscape looks like a series of successive panels displaying a panoramic view. This was, without a doubt, the reflection I wanted to capture for the SMARP contest; while I would have liked to capture more of the sky, this was the best image I could get in the moments before heading into class.
With that, I wrap up my entry for this wonderful contest. I hope you enjoyed it, and I’ll see you next week when I try to hunt down new reflections in this immense location—though next time, I’ll aim for something a bit more natural, given that the institute is situated in the heart of a rainforest. Best regards!

Saludos!
