Struggling with making a Decision?: Here are Five things you shouldn’t do.
Have you wondered how people end up taking bad decisions? Do you know that a lot of them had the opportunity to make the right choice? they thought it twice or in some cases debated on it and still went for the option they later regretted. Then they wish to go back and make corrections, which of cause is already too late, and some end up with guilt, others find something or somebody to blame failure on. Either way the damage is already done and what is left will be the consequences as opposed to rewards if it were to have gone their way.

So the question remains, how do we make sure that after leaving the crossroads of particular decisions our actions don’t come back to haunt us, and even when they do we have already been armed. How do we ensure that the right decisions that are void of influences of manipulations and conditions are being taken by us? Certainly, there are pitfalls we ought to avoid when making decisions, there are also factors we need to consider in other to make accurate decisions that will not only translate to good results but will also portend maturity.
Everybody makes decisions, from what to eat, wear, who to marry, which baby to adopt, which career to embark on and so many. I can classify these decisions into two categories.
Categories Of Decisions
Everyday Decisions; As the name implies these are decisions taken regularly. Sometimes they become a norm and the same decision is taken over again for a particular course or problem. These decisions are easy to make and the consequences if wrong ones are made are easy to bear. Everyday decisions such as what to eat, what to wear to work, when to do the shearing, and so on. I bet people suffer a lot from the bad outcomes. I can remember when I wore an orange shirt to visit my high school crush then, it turned out that their curtains were almost if not the same material as my shirt. I felt a little embarrassed then as I was trying to make a good impression of myself anyways that’s old me. So let’s continue.
Long-Term Decisions: This here is where a lot of problems ensue. This is where people end up at crossroads in decision-making, trying to choose between options. If they are lucky they get to choose between two, if not they are presented with more which further conflicts their minds and in some cases cloud their judgment. Decisions like which religion to be in, who to marry, which investment(s) to make, and which career path to follow to name but a few. People view these decisions as serious, you hear words like ‘’Make a serious decision”.
So what are the things we should avoid while taking these decisions both everyday decisions and long-term decisions?

Five Things You Shouldn’t do when Making a Decision
- Don’t make a decision when you are upset: If you are upset about something whether related to the decision you are about to make or not. Take a pause, when you are all cleared up then think of the decision critically before taking it. There is a better chance of making a wrong decision when upset than when in the right mood.
- Don’t take advice from people in the wrong field of decision: Let’s say you were making an investment decision in real estate. You should take advice from an investor or a banker or other related fields to real estate. You can’t go taking advice from a vet who of cause spends a lot of his time in the clinic.
- Don’t accept advice as your conclusion for a decision: Advises are good. They can help you avoid mistakes and also give you more insights into what you should do. But they are not the finality of your decisions. Consider the advice, weigh them and take your time so that when it doesn’t go your way you won’t blame the person that gave it to you.
- Don’t decide without getting all the facts complete: There is a saying “look before you leap” well that is what I am talking about here. Hasty decisions are bound to lead to failures almost all the time. Do well to get your facts right before making any decision.
- Don’t make a personal decision with a group: Personal decisions should be made in private. These decisions however the outcome will affect only you so you have to be sure to make these decisions yourself.
So whatever decision you are making, be sure to think it through and take all advice under consideration. Let your decision be yours only, that way you can face anything that comes your way.
