One thing that never ceases to frustrate me is just how much we love to show off our wealth, and most of the time, this is done by people who either didn’t earn the wealth or who just acquired it recently. There is always this need to turn up and remind everyone that we’re better than they are, and many times, this involves doing things extravagantly simply for the optics.
Why? Is this because we have a culture that basically adores material wealth and punishes people that society deems poor? Is this because people automatically see you as less just because you don’t have a strong financial standing? There are so many reasons, and it shows why many people are willing to go to great lengths just to prove to the world that they’re now one of the rich folks.
Last night, I stumbled on a Facebook post where a lady was talking about herself and her circle. According to the post, when each of them needed to ask for favors from each other, it was never for basic things like N2k or N5k. Nah… it was serious funds running into millions; that’s how big they were. And honestly, it’s a good thing to have a circle that’s very bankable no matter the situation.
But the thing is, that post is basically putting a bull’s-eye on everyone in that post because when she made it, she tagged every single member of the supposed circle, talking about how they gave each other millions of naira and whatnot. What was the main point of the post? To remind us that she and her friends were rich asf! And the effect? Everyone sees them as rich asf! Including criminals who could decide to go after them. It’s just crazy.
It’s the same way that some people will always find a way to bring money into something that has no business with money at all. You could be arguing about money, and they’ll tell you that they can feed your entire family. You could have an opinion, and they’d say you don’t have enough to warrant you being heard. It’s just crazy! There always seems to be this need to remind people that they’re bigger and better. And in reality, sometimes, they only look bigger and better. You never can know for sure what a person is packing offline. This internet space is free for all; believe things here at your own risk.
And now, the most frustrating ones? Those who never even worked for their money- they’re the ones who love to show off. Politicians will drive in convoys, blowing sirens that even police and ambulances combined can’t afford to use. Fraudsters will come online to show off their ill-gotten gains and pretend it was “God Did” when we all know the truth.
And now, even bandits are doing this. They kidnap people, collect ransom running into millions, and then make videos with cash mocking their victims. This is the society we find ourselves in today, where we have this incessant need to be better than everyone else. When in truth, we don’t have to be better than anyone, because the world is big enough for all of us to be the best we can be without stepping on toes.
But no, these guys won’t listen!
