Salaries and earnings are very private things that should only be between the worker and the employer. Because in this life, people are just wonderful. There are already people who know when to come ask you for money. They know that salaries are paid at the end of the month, so they come during those periods to ask you for money. And now, when they know how much you earn, it will even be worse, because then they’d presume to tell you how you can spend all that money in a way that will benefit them, of course.
That’s when you’ll start hearing things like, “How did you finish spending 200k? Weren’t you just paid yesterday?” On and on it goes, because they imply want to find a way to squeeze money out of you. And even if they borrow the money from you, the possibility of them paying it back is slim. It won’t matter what your plans for the money are, they’ll simply do whatever they want, and your needs can go to hell.
But then, these are not the only scenarios where such things can happen. Even in the workplace, it’s frowned upon to discuss salaries. Although many times, if you don’t talk about salaries, you won’t know if you’re being exploited. Most of the time, you’re paid based on the deal you made with the employers at the time of your employment. And many times, different workers have different deals. This is why sometimes, while there is a base number, people on the same level can earn differently. It happens.
However, I have to say this, just as the topic description mentioned, having our earnings public will call for more accountability. Because then, when everyone knows you earn 150k per month, you’ll have to come and explain how come you’re getting nothing less than 12 million into your account each month. The equation isn’t equating, and something has to be clarified.
But then, just as I mentioned, it’s pretty invasive. And it’s good that in real life, there are only a few bodies who have access to that kind of information. If not, people will be heavily judged based on what they earn. I could ask someone for money, and he’d tell me he doesn’t have it. But because I know that he earns 1.5 million every month, I refuse to believe him.
Everyone deserves their privacy. So yeah, while such a ruling will be helpful in ensuring transparency in society, it would make us all too transparent, and maybe too vulnerable. Which only defeats the purpose. Let’s just mind our business moving forward.
