The truth is, when you think about schooling as a whole, it’s designed not just to teach children about society, but also to expose them to the differences that exist between each unique individual. A child gets to see firsthand what other children are like, what their experiences are, and how other children's lives differ from theirs. This helps to shape their perspective from a very early point in their lives, which is very important.
The downside to this, though, is that schools are strictly controlled by the government of the land and thus, as a teacher, you can only teach what the government permits. The government has a huge sway over what schools teach the students, and the syllabus is heavily curated so that, on average, the schools will churn out the same type of students, year in, year out.
And what do we have today? We have the government cherry-picking what the students learn; they decide what part of history needs to be remembered, and for the ones that actually get taught, they twist the narrative only in the way that reflects them in the best light. That is what the schools of today are like.
And this, my friends, is the reason some parents choose to homeschool their kids because it gives them total control over what their wards consume. They can give them the facts as they should be and be more involved in the academic growth of their kids. And of course, just like with schools, there’s a downside to this. Because the social life of the kids might suffer with no school friends, and they might have issues connecting with people their age simply because they were not used to such a thing.
One way to beat that could be by making sure that the children have social lives outside of the house, regardless of not going to traditional schools. From churches to events and other social gatherings, there will be enough instances for them to connect with people of different backgrounds.
So, what am I saying? Well, I can assure you that I’m not saying that one is better than the other. As a matter of fact, I don’t think it’s possible to come to such a conclusion because every parent knows what’s best for their children, and that will drive their decision-making. A parent has a vision of how things should be, and it’s their right to act accordingly. Everyone doing what works for them will always be the best recourse, because that’s the only way that we all stay happy.
But then, in society today, one important document that is always being demanded in one’s career journey is the school certificates. From First School Leaving Certificate to High School, and even Higher Institutions… they will always be needed for jobs and promotions. But I believe that with homeschooling, all these can be circumvented somehow. Don’t know for sure, though.
Well, you have my thoughts on this. I don’t think one is better than the other. It’s just subjective, and everyone decides what works best for their kids.
