Broke is not a good place to be at all. Or let me just say, it’s not a place one will enjoy being in. And that’s the beauty of it, because if you enjoy it you’ll have no motivation to get out of it. Being broke is meant to be temporary and for a short while, and everyone experiences it at one time or the other, rich or poor.
It’s that period when buying things you want won’t be so easy because you’ll be so busy taking care of important bills. Once you know that you can’t afford your guilty pleasures anymore, know that you are very much broke!!
But then, regardless of how broke one is, there is only so much guilty pleasure one can do without. No matter how bad it gets, I’ll still bring out money to buy them and treat myself. One would have suggested data subscription because the amount of money those guys take from me every month is astronomical. However, I need the internet to work, so I don’t see it as a guilty pleasure, instead, it’s a necessary bill for me because being broke won’t stop me from buying data.
So, for me, the one thing I’d always buy even when I’m at my brokest (is that even a word?) is Snickers chocolate bar. I so much love that snack. Every other week it seems to be getting more and more expensive, but I still end up buying it. The last time I bought it, it was almost 1.3 HBD, but that didn’t stop me.
If I get the urge tomorrow as well, I’ll still go out there and buy it.
Funny enough, Snickers became my guilty pleasure only recently. At first, it used to be Fox Cookies. Back when I was in Lagos, no week went by that I didn’t eat this biscuit. Each one cost around 4HBD then, but it was always worth it to me. I loved the chocolate flavor but when that was not available, I take whatever flavor was available. However, in the event that the store didn’t have Fox Cookies, I then opt for Snickers instead.
That was how I was doing for a long time while in Lagos, just treating myself to some rich cookies regardless of how tight things were with me. And I didn’t like sharing it, so much so that I always had to sneak it into the house and make sure that my sisters didn’t have a clue. Because once they knew, then I’d have to give them some. The only way to avoid that is to buy an extra one for them, but like I said, I was broke, so I had to share!
Well, no sharing for this guy! Sometimes I kept it until everyone was asleep and started eating it at midnight. When everywhere else is quiet around you and all you can hear is the sound of the cookies crunching in your mouth, you’ll surely get an inkling of what heaven truly feels like. By the time I’m done, I’ll destroy the evidence and clean my mouth and move on.
However, since I came to Owerri, I’ve searched for this particular cookie and I haven’t found it. I’ve seen various kinds, but not the brand I’m searching for and it’s just frustrating. And leaving me with no choice, I had to fall back on my Snickers and that’s how it has been for me ever since. As it seems now, the next time I’ll be eating Fox Cookies could be when I’m back in Lagos.
So, until then, I’ll stick to Snickers and keep on packing my money and giving it to them!!
While having pleasures like these might not be good because seeing how broke you are, they can affect you financing other more important areas of your life. But then, we can’t kill ourselves, right? We can’t just live a life of paying nonstop bills left and right! It can be frustrating! Nothing feels better than eating your own money! When you work for your money, the chicken tastes sweeter and the biscuit feels richer because you know that if it’s not enough, you can always buy another. And another!
So, my dear friends, it’s okay to have guilty pleasures. Just make sure they don’t get out of hand. Keep it in check, or it will get you out of being broke, and shoot you straight down to being worse off than you were before the broke stage set in.
