Venezuela is a country full of a very extensive and funny idiosyncrasy, its people are very cheerful, sociable, generally and from everything we get a joke or a joke; but I grew up in a place full of humor and a unique way of being, that somehow the people of this state, are distinguished by having their own way of speaking very peculiar, as a mixture of old Spanish with a combination of our current language; I'm talking about the small town located in the state of Zulia, called Santa Barbara del Zulia, redundancy notwithstanding.

In my early childhood, I was living with my grandmother; when I was raised with her my first years, nothing seemed strange to me, her way of speaking, her jocularity, everything seemed normal; but after I went to live with my parents in the capital city of Caracas (I was born there), when I changed the environment, many of these customs were changing and I adopted others, I changed my way of speaking, because I was bullied a lot because obviously my characteristic way of speaking was strange in the city.

But when I went on vacation with my mother's family, things changed, I soaked up their fun, their jokes, anecdotes and beliefs. I remember one, in particular, that whenever I tell it, I can't suppress my laughter. During those years of my adolescence, it was customary to sleep in a hammock each one, they hung in the living rooms which were the most ventilated areas, since it was very hot and my grandmother at that time did not have air conditioning.

My grandmother always told us that a neighbor of hers, who was a very strange woman to tell the truth, was one of those witches who transformed into animals and so on, and in honor of the whole environment of that woman, everything was very mysterious, she did not treat anyone and lived locked up in her house very little went out. That was one of the beliefs of the people in those days. This I tell you so that you understand the story.

It turns out that one of those nights, we were getting ready to sleep, there were pure women, practically, my grandmother, my mother, my mother, my younger aunt, my younger brother who was about 4 years old and me, we placed each one, our respective hammocks and we got ready to sleep, we lay down, I remember that we fell asleep after hearing all the prayers of the grandmother ha, ha, ha, ha and already being in deep sleep, I woke up by the terrifying screams of my mother, a huge toad, was jumping on the ass insistently.,

My grandmother was already up and she shouted at once to all of us: "Grab any stick you can get or with what you can hit her, that is the wretched neighbor", I was stunned watching that toad, thinking if it would be that woman or what ha, ha, ha, ha, but my grandmother did not let us think, just shouted "hit the wretched" opening the front door of the house wide open, all between laughter and fear we tried to get that animal, armed with brooms, rakes, what we got.

At a given moment, the grandmother literally hit the toad and my mother, as she could, finished pumping it towards the street, I could see how the poor animal, jumped out, but as if limping or something similar, as fast as it could; my grandmother went behind it, shouting the name of the neighbor telling her "That is for you to have, old witch, let's see if tomorrow you come again" and she went back to the house. When we arrived we told her that she was a poor toad, that she should not shout those things, that the neighbors would think she was crazy and we laughed at my grandmother's beliefs and how funny it had all been.

The next day, that was the anecdote of the moment, we could not stop laughing, at my mother's face, at everyone's uproar, at the fate of the poor toad and at my grandmother's beliefs; but what do you think? This lady had two sons and both of them were visiting my grandmother, because my grandmother sold soft drinks and cakes, then one of them arrived and told my grandmother "Albina, imagine that we had to take my mother to the hospital, because we found her on the floor of her room all bruised and she couldn't move", that's when our laughter stopped.

My grandmother, slyly, asked him what had happened to her, so that they had gotten her like that and the boy only answered: "She only told us that she had fallen out of bed, but she gave herself a lot of blows" and at once he went to attend to his mother, who was already at home. When she left, the one who laughed was my grandmother, when she saw our astonished faces, this time the laughter was from her saying hahahahahahahaha "You saw! If it was that witch, she got what she deserved so she wouldn't bother people, it never occurs to her to come and bother us" we were left wondering if it was true or not, but the laughter always comes to us when we remember that night.
