I grew up in a family that was quite strict in many things and one of them was that mania, in a way to direct the lives of its members and this started from my grandmother, my mother, father to uncles and older cousins, all of us who were minors had to refrain from taking the contrary or opine much, in what they ordered us to do and of course there were many sentences like "you should clean this way" or "you should commit to so and so" or "you should do this, in such and such a way ...".
That is why, as soon as I could get out of the family yoke I did so, defying their opinions, questioning and mandates. Perhaps because of that I made many mistakes throughout my adult life, because I had not learned to make my own decisions, at that time I was very docile, shy and I did not like confrontations, so I ended up doing what they asked me to do; today, I only keep that I do not like confrontations or discussions.
But the day came when I wanted to learn and experiment by myself and that gave way to go out to work, meet people and everything else; in the meantime I met the father of my oldest daughter, who is 9 years older than me, I remember that when I introduced him to my mother, at once she did not like him and started with the "You should not go out with that man so experienced" and stop counting, the problems began to date the character, the fights to the point that I ended up going to live with him. I had made an important decision in my life for the first time.
From then on, I had to learn to make myself feel with my own decisions and desires, without letting others impose on me as in my childhood or adolescence. I had to learn that every decision brings with it consequences that can be good or bad and learn from them, when their results were not as expected. But now I could say that I was living according to my wishes. Many times, they questioned my decisions, my family, my partner's family, but I learned to put everyone in their place. In many occasions it cost me a lot, more, however, I stood my ground.
When I had my children, many of the family approached me to give their opinions on their upbringing and so on. Of all these "suggestions", I took the ones that were useful to me and the ones that were not, I simply discarded them and so on until today. I forged my personality with a lot of opposition, but I have maintained it, because I have understood that my duty is to feel good about myself and that I am not there to please others all the time. This has marked me so much that I have tried to raise my children with a certain independence.
From the time they are little, from the time they choose their clothes, to the time they choose what to study or what to do, supporting them on their way, but not giving them the "You should do this or he should do that...", because I know the damage that these impositions disguised as "advice" can do to a person, taking away the power to decide and to be. Of course, I give them my points of view, about any situation in which they ask me to do so, I try to make them see what perhaps because of their youth they do not see or do not detail, but the last word, they always have the last word, it is their life, not mine.
I have taught them to have and keep their own decisions, even if I don't like them very much, which sometimes has happened, and to teach them the different scenarios, so that they know what they have and can make the best decision for them. Learning to make decisions from a young age helps them mature very quickly and without so much stumbling. That is why it is so important to learn to distinguish from a good advice or a "you should do ..." knowing how to do it makes you free, even a little wise and that is achieved by keeping present and clear, what you want, you want, your feelings as a person and keep you as a priority above all.
