Samantha was in her daily routine, going to classes, then to her part-time job and at the end going home to her old grandmother, she had no more family, her mother had died when she was born and she only had a black and white photograph from which she could barely distinguish the figure of a thin girl with thick black hair. That was the only image Samantha had of the woman who brought her into this world; she never knew anything about her father.

She knew that her mother was from the countryside, just like her grandmother, but she had never been to that distant town of which her grandmother had all kinds of stories, especially those she told on rainy and cold nights, that is, with a nice cup of tea or hot chocolate; Samantha preferred to spend a Saturday night if it rained, huddled next to her grandmother listening to any of these interesting and sometimes frightening stories.

One such Saturday night, as it happened, a heavy rain was falling and getting heavier and heavier, accompanied by thunder and lightning, the night lent itself to one of these storytelling evenings. They were watching television and the news of the moment, where they said that due to the strong storm, many passengers had been stranded with their plane ticket in their hands, because the flights had been canceled. Samantha, bored, decided to turn off the TV to go straight to prepare hot chocolate, making for a night of stories.

Her grandmother, smiling, settled on the cushions of the room, waiting with pleasure, her drink to start telling one of her curious stories; already with her cup in her hand, she proceeded to tell Samantha an experience she lived with her mother when she was a little girl of about two years old...
The grandmother said that they lived in a hamlet, far from the small town, where to get to it, they had to walk about a kilometer, between the few houses that were on the road.

Always, weekly they had to make that journey, to stock up on what they needed, such as salt, sugar, which they only got these things in the village and other things like bread and so on. The grandmother tells that she always went with her little girl on foot, but one day, they were a little late, it was almost dark, when next to the road appeared a hen with her chicks all in a row, very cute and flirtatious, the little girl, Samantha's future mother, seeing that show, could not help but want to go after them and take one of them, full of emotion ...

But Samantha's grandmother felt a strange shiver that froze her blood, that warned her that something was not right and without knowing why, she took the little girl and ran as if her life depended on it. Those animals had given him a strange feeling despite how adorable they looked. Days went by and again they had to make their journey, but this time it was already night when they were coming back, in a hurry because of the time, when suddenly, right in the middle of the road, the strange hen appeared with those adorable chicks and again the little girl ran after them to take them in her hands.

But the grandmother, a woman raised in the countryside, ran terrified after the girl and managed to catch her in time before she touched any of these animals, terrified she grabbed her little girl and this time she ran without sorrow the rest of the way. She was just thinking and wondering what a hen was doing in the middle of the night with her chicks, she knew perfectly well that the hens, roosters and chicks went to sleep just as the night was falling, that was the habit of these animals and she knew it, that was not normal. At that moment, she was certain that this was out of the norm of the field, so intrigued, she consulted with her wise mother about her rare experience.

Her mother gave her some strange recommendations, which the now grandmother tried not to forget. Well, she had to continue along the road, there were no other alternatives. The following week, Samantha's grandmother with some fear returned to the road to do her shopping, but this time before taking these paths, seeing that they were completely alone, she proceeded to change the girl's beautiful dress, she took it off and put it on backwards, the girl laughed because she thought it was funny what her mother did and she herself quickly turned her dress too, they were dressed as if they had dressed in the dark, so amid laughter, they continued on their way.

Although the grandmother was expectant, keeping an eye on the road. This time they did not see any chickens or their chicks, but the grandmother could hear clearly, as between the branches of the trees, some voices of women and men were throwing curses, as if they came from different directions, as on other occasions she took her girl and ran out of the place, but then in no way did any "animal" come back to her at untimely hours along the road. According to what she was told, it was the witches and warlocks of the town who wanted Samanta's mother, to kidnap her in order to do their evil deeds on her.
