As Iran appears to be moving forward with a national crypto currency to avoid USA sanctions, some big picture questions remain.
Perhaps the biggest being what is an Iranian crypto coin actually worth.
When Venezuela introduced the Petro they pegged their coins at 1 barrel of oil.
But with Iran it is unclear how it will be pegged, and how many coins will be issued.
If the quantity is unlimited and Iran can produce as many as they want how will they be valued, now and later.
If the are pegged 1:1 with their fiat Rial, then that may work, except the sanctions are the main reason for the crypto in the first place.
How will Iran and other countries implement national cryptos is an as yet un answered question, as pegging to a fiat national currency doesn't make a lot of sense, in that fiat are all digital these days anyhow, so why have a crypto.
The idea of pegging to oil is interesting but oil prices are fairly volatile, and not all countries produce oil.
Perhaps the best option is to peg the national cryptos to gold, but who controls the price of gold, currently it is based on the USA global currency, so the cryptos would be the same, hardly a distributed system.
Perhaps all national currencies should be pegged to BTC but that has been volatile also.
Who will decide this since the global bankers want to control all money supply it will be interesting.
An lastly why have national cryptos in the first place, when BTC is already global?
