Let me talk on Fishery, due to the high protein content of fish it has a good market value.
Unlike crops , it also brings harvest in a short span. Society didn't give the much attention it needed, not until the price of oil fell. People who invested into it are benefiting e.g Atiku Abubaka , Songhai farm etc.
As an Agriculturist I specialize on Fish Farming.
Fish Farming is the rearing of fishes.
Fish culture technique deals with the divers ways of rearing fish which will be conducive for you.
*Monoculture: Rearing just one specie of fish.
*Polyculture: Rearing divers kind of fishes( note: a specie is called fish, two or more species are called fishes).
LEVELS OF FISH CULTURE SUITABLE FOR YOU
- Extensive culture: Fishes are reared under comprehensive attention, ie stocked in a standing facilities.
- Semi-intensive culture: It has to do with raising fish in your culture facilities, with minimal attention.
- Extensive Culture: Here you grow fish at your backward, without giving them much attention.
THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE STARTING A FISH FARM
°Capital: Depends on the culture technique you are willing to apply, E.g extensive culture, requires little capital because minimal attention will be given to it, but intensive culture requires a huge capital, because of the stocking facilities, feeds , water supply etc.
°Location of fish farm: the land must be close to the nearest town and market, free from predators.
°Land mass: this could be dependent on the culture technique, either extensive or intensive. For Intensive culture two plots of land will do, and Extensive culture, half a plot will do.
°Pond size, design: Concrete pond or the use of water tanks trampoline, any of which you prefer
°Constant water supply: Fishes are aquatic animals, they can't survive contrary to water. It's important to have a bore hole system in the vicinity, cause it will help them grow. Rain water ( it has pH of 5.5_7.0 which is slightly acidic) and chemically treated water is inappropriate for fishes. A slightly basic water is appropriate.
°Technical know how: When knowledge is minimal abuse is inevitable. In rearing fish e.g catfish, could be in two ways by either rearing through the fingerling level or by hypophizing( process of inducing hormones into the fish, in order to release eggs which could be cultured ). Hypophizing is faster.
This picture here is a hypophyzation exercise that was carried out some months back, after hypophyzing 10hours later, we collected the eggs from the female catfish and we removed the gonad in a male catfish(a sac that contains the sperm cell) and we fertilize and cultured it.
