I was trying to dig through my old photos to see if I could find something "punk" enough to use for the opening shot. Unfortunately, the closest I could get was me standing next to a KISS statue with my tongue out. Since they are more metal than punk, I decided to go to my old stand by pixabay for something else.
I turn another year older in a couple of weeks, so I felt this old punk rocker probably fit the bill perfectly!
It's Tuesday, so that means it's time for another #threetunetuesday sponsored by @ablaze. I've been thinking for a while about some of my favorite covers of popular tunes. It turns out many of them are done by punk bands. I actually use the term "punk" a little loosely here because I know hardcore punks would probably scoff at some of these bands.
Like many other genres of music, I do feel that punk has it's more mainstream stuff and then it also has the edge of the cliff stuff that isn't for the feint of heart. While all of the songs I am going to share today fall closer to the mainstream side of things, I do appreciate some good old fashioned anarchy every now and then...
So let's get to it!
I actually think I heard the cover of this song before I ever heard the original version by Lynn Anderson. While the country version is an absolute classic, there is something about this version of "I never promised you a rose garden" by Suicide Machines that I absolutely love. I guess it is pretty easy to make a good cover when the tune and lyrics you are starting with are just so good.
I really love it when a band can take a classic like this and absolutely make it their own. This is a perfect example of it. It's got the punk screaming you expect as well as some fantastic guitar work. I just can't say enough about this song. Give it a listen and I think you will agree with me. Have you ever heard this cover before? Have you heard the original?
I will never deny the fact that I am a huge "yacht rock" fan. Yacht Rock is the style of music that was popular in the 70's and early 80's. Think Christopher Cross, Steely Dan, Michael McDonald, England Dan and John Ford Cooley, you get the idea. I would be remiss if I didn't also mention Loggins and Messina.
Danny's song is one of my favorites of theirs and this punk cover by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes just gets me singing along every freaking time. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes actually made a dang good career doing covers like this. They have at least five different albums of just punk covers like this. I highly encourage you to head over to Spotify or whatever your streaming service is and check them out if you haven't in the past.
I have zero doubt you are going to find at least one song where you love their cover just as much as the original.
I think my favorite part of this song is the line "love the girl who holds the world in a paper cup, come on and drink it up, love her and she'll bring you luck."
If you have ever seen the movie "Eurotrip", there is little doubt you have heard this cover of 99 Red Ballons by Goldfinger. I remember when the original version of 99 Red Balloons came out. I was so young, but it was so different than anything else that was out in the US at the time. Plus we often got to hear both the English and the German(?) version played in the US at any given time. It was cool.
Fast forward two decades or so and we were given this pretty amazing cover. Again, I understand this is a bit more mainstream punk that actual punk, but it is still a really great cover of a pretty iconic 80's tune.
Plus, this version gives us the best of both worlds with both English and German lyrics (depending on the verse). I dare you to play the video above and not sing along at least a little. Bet.
And finally, a bonus track for you...
While I recognize this is more of a Ska cover than a Punk cover, it is still a really great cover of a song that was already pretty awesome by Dexy's Midnight Runners. Plus, Save Ferris is just awesome. I wish they had done more stuff like this because they were just so perfect at it.
Do you have favorite punk or ska cover? Let me know about it in the comments. I can't wait to find some new favorites!
