After the deep dive into antiquity with the amphitheatre of Durres, today the historical waters are a bit shallower. We wade into the Middle Ages. The beginning of which saw a rather prosperous Dyrrhachium as part of the East Roman/Byzantine Empire.
Nach dem tiefen Eintauchen in die Antike mit dem Amphitheater von Durres geht es heute in etwas seichtere, historische Gewässer. Wir waten ins Mittelalter. Dessen Anfänge sahen ein recht wohlhabendes Dyrrhachium als Teil Ostroms/Byzantiums.

When you walk around the amphitheatre coming from the main mosque, pretty much half-way you will come across what is left of the medieval city wall. The first I saw were the ruins of a former gate:
Wenn man das Amphitheater von der Hauptmoschee kommend umrundet, kommt man auf halbem Weg an die Reste der mittelalterlichen Stadtmauer. Als erstes sah ich die Ruinen eines Tores:
Interestingly, the original brick wall was repaired with natural stones. The wall was originally built under emperor Anastasius I. at the beginning of the 6th century AD, I guess entirely out of bricks & concrete. Extensive repairs became necessary after an earthquake in 1273.
Die ursprüngliche Ziegelmauer wurde interessanterweise mit Natursteinen repariert. Die Originalkonstruktion stammt vom Anfang des 6. Jh. n.Chr. & wurde unter Anastasius I. wohl komplett aus Ziegeln & Beton errichtet. Nach einem Erdbeben wurden 1273 ausgiebige Reparaturen notwendig.

The remains of the walls are called Durres Castle, although there doesn't seem to be much of a castle. Acc. to Wikipedia, the city wall is less than 5m high, but for what I saw, at least parts of it are way higher.
Die Mauerreste nennen sich Burg von Durres, obwohl ich von einer Burg nichts bemerkt habe. Laut Wikipedia ist die Mauer nicht mal 5m hoch. Nach meiner Einschätzung ist sie an einigen Stellen aber deutlich höher.
Above, the outside of the wall at the upper gate. Below, another gate a bit further south. Not sure, how original that is, since it lacks any actual gate. There is no way to close it, nor any remains of former such structures.
Oben sieht man die Mauer am oberen Tor von außen. Unten sieht man ein weiteres, südlicher gelegenes Tor. Erscheint nicht sehr original, da es kein eigentliches Tor gibt. Man kann es nicht schließen & es gibt auch keine dafür notwendigen Reste.
The wall in its original state was probably higher still. On the wall itself there is almost nothing left of the battlements. Would be quite useless this way. Because even in its most prosperous times, Durres was in constant danger of attacks by barbarians, be it Germanic tribes, slavs or others.
Die Mauer im Originalzustand war wohl noch deutlich höher, denn es fehlen fast alle Zinnen. Wäre so jedenfalls ziemlich nutzlos. Denn auch in der Blütezeit war Durres ständig in Gefahr, von Barbaren angegriffen zu werden, seien es Germanen, Slawen oder andere.

Above you can see one of the original towers. Note that it seems as if someone built his home into the wall beside it. The wall is pretty much part of city life:
Oben sieht man einen der Originaltürme. Man beachte, daß jemand anscheinend sein Haus in die Mauer daneben gebaut hat. Diese ist offensichtlich ins Stadtleben integriert.
Above is another tower, beside it, the wall has been cut open to allow modern traffic.
Ein weiterer Turm. Daneben wurde die Mauer aufgerissen, um modernen Verkehr durchzulassen.
This is the tower from the title photo. Looks almost complete from the outside, at least the battlements are in place. It seems that the lower parts of the outside needed a lot of repairs, though.
Dies ist der Turm vom Titelbild. Sieht von außen fast komplett aus, zumindest gibt es Zinnen. Scheint aber so, als wären im unteren Bereich ausgiebige Reparaturen nötig gewesen.
Beside the wall, there are a few monuments. This one I found particularly interesting. It remembers the victims of war & in particular those of an Austrian war ship of World War I.
Neben der Mauer finden sich einige Monumente. Dieses fand ich besonders interessant, weil es an Kriegsopfer erinnert, insbesondere an diejenigen eines österreichischen Schiffes aus dem 1. WK.
Above, another gate. Again without any security features. Below a view towards the Venetian Tower. The monument you see honours Sabri Tuçi, an Albanian sculptor.
Oben wieder ein Tor. Auch ohne Sicherungsfunktion. Unten ein Blick zum Venezianischen Turm. Das dortige Monument ehrt Sabri Tuçi, einen albanischen Bildhauer.
Below is another monument near the wall. This one is for Mujo Ulqinaku, a navy sergeant who died in the defence of Durres against invading Italian forces in WWII.
Unten ein weiteres Monument nahe der Mauer. Dieses erinnert an Mujo Ulqinaku, einen Marinesoldaten, der bei der Verteidigung von Durres gegen italienische Angreifer im 2. WK fiel.
Which brings us to the Venetian Tower. At the end of the 12th century, Byzantium finally lost control over Durres. It went to Venice for a decade or so & then changed hands frequently, until Venice regained it in 1392. In 1497 or 1501 (depending on the Wikipedia you use) it ended up under Ottoman control. So, I guess the Venetian Tower is from that last medieval century.
Was uns zum Venezianischen Turm bringt. Am Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts verlor Byzantium die Kontrolle über Durres. Es ging für ein Jahrzehnt an Venedig & wechselte danach ständig den Besitzer, bis Venedig 1392 wieder die Macht übernahm. 1497 oder 1501 (je nach Wikipedia) schließlich übernahmen die Osmanen das Ruder. Also stammt der Venezianische Turm wohl aus dem letzten mittelalterlichen Jahrhundert.
But that's not all there is to medieval Durres. On my way back to the hotel I noticed these pillars, just standing around somewhere:
Das ist aber noch nicht alles vom mittelalterlichen Durres. Auf dem Weg zurück zum Hotel fielen mir diese Säulen auf, die einfach so herumstanden:
In einer Gasse direkt um die Ecke stolperte ich über ein weiteres Überbleibsel aus dem Mittelalter, ein Badehaus:
Or that's what I thought. Turns out, the info in front of the building was not correct. It seems, the bath was built only in the 18th century. Still nice, but not medieval. Well, nice... The front is. The backside, though:
Dachte ich jedenfalls. Aber die Info am Gebäude war falsch. Es scheint, das Badehaus wurde erst im 18. Jh. gebaut. Nicht schlecht, aber nicht mittelalterlich. Vorne hui. Hinten pfui:
There are ruins of a Roman era bath somewhere, though. Maybe I can find them. Anyway, back to the Middle Ages. Before I got back to the hotel, I came across another interesting historical spot:
Es gibt jedoch Ruinen eines römischen Bades irgendwo. Vielleicht finde ich sie ja noch. Egal, zurück zum Mittelalter. Auf dem Weg zum Hotel kam ich an einem weiteren historischen Ort vorbei:
A Byzantine market place. According to the information board there, it is from the same period as the city wall, the beginning of the 6th century AD. Must have been quite a nice spot at its heyday.
Ein byzantinischer Marktplatz. Laut der Infotafel vor Ort stammt er aus der gleichen Zeit wie die Stadtmauer, dem Beginn des 6. Jh. n.Chr. Muß damals ziemlich nett gewesen sein.
In the centre is a well. Some of the original marble floor plates seem to be still in place. Not much to see, but interesting.
Im Zentrum ist eine Quelle. Einige der ursprünglichen Marmorbodenplatten scheinen noch vorhanden zu sein. Viel sieht man nicht, aber doch interessant.
The market place was partially surrounded by service buildings.
Der Marktplatz war teilweise von Dienstleistern umgeben.
The circular portico has been partially reconstructed. At least, I'm pretty certain it was not upright like that, when they found it. Like the amphitheatre, the wall & the bath house, the market place is in the city centre. Everything is within walking distance from each other & can easily be visited in one day or less. So much for today, now, just a few more pics:
Der runde Portikus wurde teilweise rekonstruiert. Jedenfalls bin ich ziemlich sicher, daß man das nicht aufrecht stehend gefunden hat. Wie das Amphitheater, die Mauer & das Badehaus ist der Marktplatz im Stadtzentrum. Alles ist zu Fuß leicht erreichbar & kann an einem Tag oder weniger besucht werden.
