I noticed that on hive.blog, the view of tables has changed. You need to scroll sideways. Silly idea. If that annoys you like it does me, you can read it with proper tables on ecency.com or peakd.com.

When I gathered my first impressions in Durres, I also stumbled upon the amphitheatre, which is located right beside the major mosque in the city centre. Interested in history & archaeology, I of course took a closer look. The size is impressive.

Beside the - well, a - city wall near the mosque, there was part of a smaller wall of different construction, which made me curious what else might be a further uphill. So, I went up the stairs & found the first signs of the amphitheatre, some old walkways to the arena. Note the combination of bricks & stones:Neben der Stadtmauer nahe der Moschee gab es auch ein Stück Mauer anderer Machart, das mich neugierig darauf machte, was es wohl weiter bergauf noch geben könnte.

Also interesting that modern buildings have been essentially built inside the arena. According to Wikipedia, this was going on well after the amphitheatre had been found in 1966. They excavated part of it back then & then let it rot. The commie government didn't really care. Conservation efforts only started in the current century.

A bit of a surprise then that still so much of it is in quite a good state. Evidence of Roman building quality. After all, it was probably originally built in the 2nd century AD during emperor Trajan's reign (perhaps only under Hadrian). It had a diameter of almost 140m & was 20m high, & could hold up to 20000 spectators. Until 404 AD the arena saw gladiator games.

Acc. to the local information it was emperor Honorius, who stopped the games & instead built a church inside the amphitheatre. Acc. to Wikipedia that already happened before Honorius, in the 4th century. The amphitheatre was destroyed at least twice by earthquakes. Only partially, I think, which might explain some inconsistencies in the construction.

Views from the north of the theatre, east side above & west side below it. The elongated structure with the modern roof on the west side is supposed to be the church.

How did that cat get in there? Oh well...Wie kommt die Katze da rein? Naja, ...

My attempt at an overview, not really helped by the lights, because it was already a bit late in the day. Below are east & west side again with a bit more detail. Interesting that the walkways actually stayed intact for so long.

After the Ottomans conquered the area, they built a new city wall (which will be covered in a separate post) beside the amphitheatre. They obviously had no use for the arena & it was covered & forgotten. By now the amphitheatre is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A look into the guts of the arena. Took another photo just of the hole, & with some editing the inner workings are visible:Ein Blick in die Innereien der Arena.

Well, not much going on there. But again interesting to see the construction. You would think the stones would be used first & then the brick structure on top. But the doorway is made of bricks & a stone wall put on top.

The ruins of service (?) structures to the south of the arena. Again we see a combination of bricks & stones.Die Ruinen von Dienstleistungsgebäuden (?) südlich der Arena. Auch hier eine Kombination aus Ziegeln & Steinen.

More rooms in the service area. Note the strange entrance. Half the room is used just for the hallway.

The room beside it has also some kind of hallway, but way shorter.

If you want to get a really good view, there is an observation platform on the hill above the amphitheatre. You can also enter the arena, if you want to have a closer look, entrance fee is around 3 euros. I'm stingy, so I probably won't go inside, but if I do, I will write an update.
