We have about 2.5 weeks to prepare, build and present our final project.
Our final project seeks to put food banks and shelters in touch with restaurants who have leftover perishable goods at the end of the day. We think it is crazy that our city wastes so much food while there are thousands of people in our town that go to bed hungry every night. It is a problem that should not exist. One of the main reasons for this problem is the logistics of food distribution. It is hard to efficiently get perishable foodstuffs to a shelter that is able to receive them. Hopefully our app will put that issue to rest and help do some good in the community.
This is a big project and we are all excited to work on it. But the scope of the project is massive and involves learning a lot of new technologies to fill in the gaps. This weekend I started learning how to use the Google maps API, which will be a key component of the app. Our project directors are asking us to use Semantic UI for styling as well. And although we have used Socket and React in previous projects this one will demand us to know both technologies inside and out, upside and down. Our instructors did mention that the final 3 weeks of class is where everything comes together and we will end up really learning how to develop.
I think most of us have committed the next 14 days to nothing but this project, including weekends. I believe that will include Labor Day weekend, which is fine with me. At least until we have a serious handle on this project it would be crazy to relax too much. Especially since this type of product demo really deserves a good presentation. So we will need a few days to put that together and rehearse as well.
We received the project on Friday, started storyboarding immediately after that and drew up some plans. We were coding on Saturday morning and again today. We are all going to be pushing ourselves hard for the next couple of weeks and I worry about burnout for all of us. Although I think if we can get a big chunk of the project done quickly it will take a lot of the pressure off.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the coming week that things will go smoothly and I will be able to give as much help as I receive.
