Today was the first official day of the Punchcode bootcamp and was just a simple orientation to get ready for the real action starting on Monday.
All of the instruction is done on MacBooks, so all students are required to have one or borrow one from the program to use. So we spent time setting up the accounts we will need, downloading software and packages that will get used throughout the program, and just getting comfortable using the MacBook and the command line.
The instructors and us students also spent time getting to know each other. We are going to be all up in each others' faces for the next 12 weeks trying to maintain sanity. Has anyone out there done a coding bootcamp? One of the instructors has told us to expect A LOT of mental stress and the high likelihood of someone having a mental breakdown. Can someone verify this? I'm a pretty laid-back dude but I'm sure that hours and hours in front of a laptop during a Vegas summer could push anyone over the edge.
The location is great. Right on the corner of the arts district in downtown and a short walk to bars and restaurants. For locals, downtown Vegas is where most of us spend our time. There is lots to see and do within a few minutes of the school. So I guess I'll have lots of options for blowing off steam.
The building itself is cozy and comfortable. Perfect since I'll be practically living there for the entire summer!
I'm feeling pretty excited thinking about how the next 12 weeks of class will go. Learning new things is fun, and opens doors to so many other possibilities. Who really knows where I'll end up at the end of this schooling. Hopefully somewhere earning a good salary and creating some awesome projects.
