25 January - Thursday
Students Day, Tatyanin Day, Babi Kut
On January 25, in 1755, Empress Elizaveta Petrovna signed a decree "On the Establishment of the Moscow University", and Tatyana's Day became an official university day. On this day, even extremely drunk students did not touch the quarterly students. And if they approached, they trumpeted and asked: "Does not the master need help in a student?"
Ancient, the name of the holiday is Babi Kut. In Russia, the so-called baby corner - the place by the oven, where there were objects of household utensils, and where the mistress spent a lot of time. This place was also called the sun. In honor of this, on Tatyana's Day, "Bolshuha" (the elder mistress in the family) baked a loaf of bread symbolizing the sun. She took it out of the oven and, letting the bread cool, shared between family members. Everyone had to get at least a piece. In addition, on this day it was necessary to go to the river for water and to dislodge the dust from the rugs. The people said: "Tatiana and the loaf bake, and rugs hit, and the round dance leads." One more belief of this day is connected with the management of the economy. It was believed that the girl, born in Tatyana's day, would be a good mistress. Anyone will marry, but everyone wants to find their own destiny. Therefore, on Babi Kut all the girls dreaming to marry did a broom which they tried to leave in the house of the desired groom - and so that their mother-in-law could not find. However, experienced mothers of families knew about this custom and not every girl was allowed to enter the threshold.
