13 March - Tuesday
Burgzondeg - Festival of Fire
Day of peeping through the keyholes
Day of diet
Day of drinking in a romantic way
1781 English astronomer William Herschel discovered Uranus
It is known that the 13th day of the third month is the most successful day of the year for all witches and sorcerers (especially if this day falls on Friday), because the number 13 invariably associates with the traditional coven of thirteen witches, and the number 3 is a powerful magical number.
On this day, in Luxembourg, a pagan fire festival is held annually, called Burgsonndeg, which ignites countless fires that meet Spring and the birth of a new Sun.
Young people climb the nearest hill and build a big fire to mark the season change. This fire symbolizes the victory of the Sun over the Winter.
It is the only preserved tradition of the four fires that are ignited traditionally in the year, and whose original values are no longer remembered: a fire symbolizing the victory of the Sun over Winter; fire representing the rebirth of nature; the fire that causes the summer solstice, and the fire accompanying the departure of the autumn.
In former times, to build a giant fire, young people walked around the city and asked for straw. There was also a certain ritual of firing a fire. These pagan traditions and symbols (which also existed in neighboring countries) were changed by the church when the country converted to Christianity.
The ignition of fire, which in older centuries was generally regarded as an obligation, is increasingly becoming a diversion for teenagers, and is being organized by some village associations: Boy Scouts, a music society, a fire brigade.
