I'm a little late coming out with today's, er, yesterdays, alliterated family value. What can I say, sometimes Real Life gets in the way of posting here on Steemit. The nerve of it!
Yesterday's family value is (was)
SEEK TRUTH SATURDAY
As you may have already read in my short BIO on the top of my home page, I describe myself as a seeker of Truth.
Note, I don't claim to know all truth, or to have all the truth, I am simply a seeker of Truth.
Part of what differentiates those statements is the fact that I've lived long enough now to know that I don't know everything. In my youthful exuberance(arrogance) I used to think that if I formed a relatively researched opinion on something then I became absolutely sure I was right.
Boy, I couldn't have been more absolutely wrong, even if I was sometimes technically right!
I would like to think that this life experience has brought some humility and perspective on my understanding of what is truth. In particular, I've discovered that in most things, being right isn't as important as being in right relationship to those around me.
Philippians 2:1-4 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, 2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
In humility considering others to be more important than myself.
That is, their perspectives are more important, their hopes are more important, their fears are more important and the series of life events that have shaped them to be so are all more important than me having to be "right." Knowing something to be true doesn't give me the right to be unloving to those who don't see it the same way.
Having said all that, it doesn't mean that in my quest for Truth that I haven't found many things that are absolutely True.
Not in a relative sense, or in an "all claims to truth are equally valid" universalist non-sense. No, to the contrary, as in most things in life, their is only one true Truth to any matter. It is up to us to seek it out, from whatever sources it may come from, for Truth is Truth.
Proverbs 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, and it is the glory of a king to search out a matter.
As a family value, I want my children to be seekers of truth as well. If they seek it, they will find it. If they find it, they will find freedom, for Truth sets us free.
If something is not true, then it is a lie, and lies believed to be true can set us on a lifelong trajectory of enslavement to our own ignorance.
Think about all the things that we now know to be true yet past generations were ignorant of. Such as;
the earth revolves around the sun (sorry geo-centric believers, but it just ain't so.)
the earth isn't flat (sorry flat-Earthers, but you're wrong.)
all men are indeed created equal (sorry racists, there is only one race, HUMAN!)
Tom Brady is the Greatest Of All Time and His Patriots Dynasty is the G.O.A.T. (sorry Jets, Bills, and Miami fans.)
What are some other lies that we may be believing to be true today that time will eventually prove out?
With "Seek Truth" as a core family value my children will be able to adapt and grow as more light is shed on the mysteries of the universe. Hopefully, along with the other family values, they will remain humble and loving to others views even while standing strong on the things they will come to know as Truth for themselves.
Perhaps, the greatest, non-negotiable Truth that I want my children to know and make their life long passion is seeking Truth incarnate; Jesus Christ.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
As a family, we serve the Lord. It is my prayer that my children will come to know this Truth for themselves, not just because it was a family value, but because He is Truth, and in Him is everlasting life.
