Recently, I have started thinking of an intriguing part of human nature. I have come across many people throughout my life who were aware of the truth but still could not come to terms with it. In fact, I was one of such individuals myself before.
In my opinion, the issue does not relate to misunderstanding of something. Actually, people understand reality perfectly well, but they are unable to accept it because doing so means rejecting some beliefs or assumptions that give them comfort and assurance. When these beliefs are rejected, people become emotionally hurt, which is why they prefer to feel good instead of accepting the reality.
One particular instance that I want to mention is religion. People have various beliefs regarding what will happen after their death, consequences of doing certain things and spiritual significance of all these aspects. These beliefs give hope, consolation and motivation to lead a meaningful life. It is true whether such beliefs can be proved or not.
Nevertheless, the notion is not applicable solely to religion. Each one of us has personal views, opinions, assumptions, and narratives through which we understand the world. At times, our opinions turn out to be helpful, while in other instances, they blind us from reality. Challenging our opinions is sometimes an unpleasant task, but it could help us improve personally.
Personally, my opinion is that we need to muster the courage and accept the truth, no matter how unpleasant it is for us. Accepting the truth might hurt our feelings and alter our view of ourselves in some way, but accepting it will make us stronger, more knowledgeable and resilient. Truth enables us to mature, gain a better outlook on things and evolve.
Nonetheless, that is my personal outlook and I would greatly appreciate hearing yours. Has there been a situation in your life when accepting the hard truth helped you to change and mature?
Thank you very much for your time and attention.
