Forty years ago, about forty years ago, I received a poster with Albert Einstein and a famous saying of his ... "I want to know God's thoughts. The rest are details."
I thought, here's a man who knows what he wants. If he could have known that, more of the world's problems would have been solved. What I will say next, please do not take it as a comparison. Of course not. I mean, my brain works this way through associations. A word, an image, a phrase makes me think somehow in accordance with this.
I woke up wondering where to choose @calumam the words for this contest, POB Word of the Week. Words are important and powerful. "In the beginning was the Word ..." another important saying in Christianity. From the Bible, I suppose, I'm not sure because I didn't read the Bible.
I see that in English "WORD" is also very important, if you add another "L" it becomes a "WORLD"!
I'm trying to get to the word of the week: Equanimity. Interesting word, especially for me, I'm not a good connoisseur of English. I realized that I had never used it before. So, this contest can also help me better understand and know English! (I wish I!).
equanimity
(noun)
-mental calmness, composure, and evenness of temper, especially in a difficult situation
(With the help of the Oxford Dictionary)
I hope no one is harmed that I put the definition of the word, I do it just for me, to remember.
Again a big problem, I look at the white sheet (actually the laptop screen), and I don't know where to start. To go to philosophy, history, human characterology, I don't know much. Of course, I can use Google (or another engine) but that, in fact, I want to look for the correspondence and the meaning of these words in my life, to find them in the memories and events of my life.
This can't be found on Google ...
Speaking of which, I've heard that many people type their names into Google to find out what Google knows about them! I've never done this and I'm not at all curious to know what Google knows about me.
So ... equanimity!
"Mental calmness", sounds like the result of exercise or training. An exercise not always done consciously, ie to be the collateral result of an activity. I mean religion. I don't think everyone who goes to church, temple, or other places regularly goes to gain mental calmness. Each with his own needs. But, in the end, the most dedicated can get a state of calm, a certain detachment from the problems and struggles of everyday life. They acquire this calm with an understanding of existence on earth as just a preparation for something totally special that will follow after death. Then why stress unnecessarily when the current life is just a transition. Those who truly believe this are few (I think so). Because the vast majority say they believe but do not behave as if they believe. That is, they are agitated, they want as much from life as possible. This happens both to ordinary people and to those whose job it is to sell calm.
I mean religious leaders and all kinds of gurus.
Religious leaders, and now I am referring to those I see in my country (Orthodox Christian), live and behave very differently from what they provide. I don't go into details but my conclusion is that their lives are also crushed by countless desires and struggle to accumulate power and wealth, or this is the exact opposite of calm.
On the other hand, the well-known "gurus", especially in the Yoga area. I don't have much knowledge about it, just fragments of information and my belief that it is not exactly as it is said. The image is spectacular, seen from other cultures, such as the European one, of which I am also a part. These gurus, who stand out especially for their lack of needs, are, after all, the calmest people on earth. Nothing disturbs them when they are in meditation! And yet, would we all like to be like them? Can anyone imagine what our world would be like if we all sat alone in meditation? Without moving! A portion of food for animals that are not at all calm.
Well, just imagination!
And these famous gurus, who have acquired many proselytes from the Western world, a world by definition agitated.
A well-known example is that of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He developed Transcendental Meditation. Beatles members were drawn to these meditation techniques and traveled to India, accompanied by many fellow actors and musicians. They were devoted students to Yogi until they noticed his inclination toward the beautiful women in the group, especially Mia Farrow. As well as Guru's desire to advertise with the help of the Beatles, which he succeeded in, Transcendental Meditation (MT) spread throughout the world. Groups also appeared in Romania, my country, a small and communist country in the '80s. A large part of the Romanian intellectuals of the time was attracted, but it ended badly for them. MT was banned and its members were arrested, deported, and forced to do unskilled work.
It seems that I have moved far away from the subject, what I wanted to say is that this field of providing and learning meditation and the calm, serene life has left room for many charlatans.
I don't want to say that Yoga techniques are not good but I have many examples when everything has degenerated from calm and simple life without needs and ambition to sects led by Teachers who have managed to accumulate fabulous fortunes.
So I'm for self-taught people. That is, let's try to apply some decent book techniques ourselves to learn to meditate, calm down and get rid of the stress of a hectic life.
Unfortunately, our lives are so diverse and we have so many needs that we cannot remain calm when we fail to do what we want when we see that something we love is lost or destroyed. There are countless examples of what prevents us from having a quiet and calm life. I mean most people can't say that calm is the dominant character trait.
The quiet life, calm can be partially approached, it's a desire of normal people. Most have a personal way of calming down. In general, an escape from the crowded cities where existence requires a permanent confrontation with those around. A time spent in nature can bring calm and cleanse the body of stress. At the moment, because, once we have left those places and returned to our homes and jobs, the batteries of calm are quickly discharged.
For me, the sea means calm. Totally contrary to what is said, that the sea shakes you. Of course, not in all situations ...
A walk with the child on the beach observing the child's immense desire to learn and understand the life around him. Alone!
Of course, the example above refers only to a certain part of life, a short period, until the child grows up. I now vaguely remember those times but I feel like a wave of calm, like a heat flooding my body. It is the nostalgia of a past and unrepeatable event that I confuse with Mental calmness.
My participation in @calumam's weekly contest. I feel that I got lost and that I lost the subject along the way. I was tempted not to post but that would be worse than an uninspired post. For the possible boredom of the reader, I apologize!
