If anyone is wondering what made me write in Latin, I have to explain to those who have not yet tried to find out what proofofbrain means. A new community in Hive, the least restrictive of all communities. Because the only condition required is to prove that you have a brain. And if you can write something, a story, if you can use a photo, a movie, a song ... it means, without a doubt, that you have a brain!

Now I come to the title in Latin. "Cogito ergo sum" is a philosophical statement, belongs to the French philosopher René Descartes and means, "I think, therefore I am"!

In fact, what does that mean? The philosopher starts from the premise that his senses can deceive him and that everything he thinks can be wrong and thus he doubts everything, even his existence. But the simple fact that he doubts everything, that he thinks, proves that he exists.

Some kind of proof of brain!

Returning to proofofbrain, calumam@calumam launched a contest called "POB Word of the Week" in which he proposes a word and "members of the community can share their thoughts about in a post."

Simple and complicated at the same time. Simple, because anyone can have an opinion about a word. Complicated, because the words chosen are not very common, they have a philosophical charge that requires some effort to make a reasonable post.

This week's word is "Ego."

I'm going to see what Ego means, according to Oxford Dictionaries ...

"a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance"

Ego is the Latin word meaning "I". From the Latin ego, these adjectives were formed: egoist, egoistic, egoistic. Their meaning is clear.

I wanted to make a pun, if "Cogito, ergo sum" means "I think, therefore I am" then "non-cogito, ego sum" means "not thinking, therefore I am an egoist".

I know that the statement is not true, I have known very intelligent people, that is, who think very well but, at the same time, are selfish.

The ego (self-esteem or self-importance) is one of the greatest defects of the human being, in my opinion. This leads to a misperception of others, starting from the premise that you are more valuable than everyone else. Nothing matters except you and you consider that everything that is best belongs to you.
Because of this, these people will always want to get everything, to the detriment of others. Ignoring others. Doing harm to others.

Selfishness is an undesirable trait.

I remember a very old Italian film, which I saw in my youth. It was called "Me, me, me and the others." The title says it all ... I saw a whole gallery of selfish people. I was young and naive, I didn't really notice the others. This film made me pay more attention to the character of colleagues, friends, relatives, and I found that many gave more importance to them than they deserved.

Although the exaggerated ego may belong to people regardless of the degree of civilization and intelligence or qualification, there are a few more exposed categories. Politicians and artists!

I was lucky and unlucky to meet many artists. Musicians, both rock music and classical music, opera. Actors and directors. Painters. I can confirm that most of them were "sick" of themselves. It can be considered an occupational disease.

I don't know if this character trait, the ego, can be changed.

All I know is that those who are far too self-satisfied, who pursue only personal good and cannot think of others, who do not know what modesty and altruism mean, are ultimately unhappy. Because they are alone.
