The Crime Problem
No national characteristics, no political regime, no system of law, police punishment, treatment, or even terror, has rendered a country exempt from crime… What is indisputable is that new and much higher levels of crime become established as a reflex of affluence ~ Radzinowicz and King (1977)
Crime in the U.S cost the American government and taxpayers over 1.7 trillion dollars annually. It starts large at the top and gets smaller as it trickles downs.
Crime-induced production refers to costs in resources to fight crime.
There are so many local organizations and police departments that receive money from the federal government to fight crime. The planning and operations cost for public safety is big business. Events and public gatherings calls for law enforcement and firefighters and EMS. White collar crimes take extensive investigations along with other high level organized crimes that take years and infiltration to understand who, how and where crimes are taking place.
Opportunity costs refer to lost time by potential victims and perpetrators, who could have spent their time doing something more productive..
Opportunity costs works best for the group trying to track down a criminal. Criminal activity has to operate and once that operation is identified the key persons becomes the new work. The day-to-day operators of a crime can quickly be captured and most times through an informant or victim.
Their capture can help the investigator begin to understand why/how the crime occurred.
Transfers refer to money obtained through fraud and theft. It is called a transfer since the money (or property) is transferred from one person to the next.
At one point in time the American government spent more money on crime-induced production that target minorities. This means the more effort is placed to identify blue collar crimes than white collar crimes. Also, it could mean that simply more blue collar crimes are committed than white collar crimes.
Crime causes a lot of impact on society. It causes problems for the victim, perpetrator and their families. It causes fear and mistrust in the community. It also cause a decline in the quality of life as seen in the recent foreclosure crisis across the U.S.
Criminology is the science or discipline that studies crime and criminal behavior.
Our knowledge is based on our understanding of reality
