I’ve been hoarding all sorts of Spider-Man original art for quite some time now, so this is going to sound super ungrateful and “first world problem-ish”. But losing out of a piece you had your heart set on hurts. I mean, these are all one of a kind works of original comic book art!!! So it’s not like you can just get it some other time. More often than not…it’s gone and you just gotta think about other shit. This was today’s painful lesson.
I’m going to start off by staring that I’m unbelievably grateful for the awesome pieces I was able to secure this year. I added some real gems by Alex Ross, Mark Bagley, Frank Cho…all of which I’ll be compiling in my 2021 top 5 (or maybe 10). But it still stings to miss out on a piece…and that’s exactly what happened here.
I contacted long time comic creator Scott Koblish a while back about some Spidey pieces and we got to talking. Scott is a really sweet dude who genuinely seemed to take an interest in my interests. We got to chatting and he told me about 4 issues of a Spidey book he did for Marvel which featured my favorite villain, Mysterio.
After some negotiation and back and forth, we just couldn’t come to a number that we both agreed upon and he decided to send em on over to one of the big auction houses to be sold off there. I don’t blame him one bit. Art has been fetching a sweet premium…especially cool shit which this is very much so. But it’s still a bummer.
Below are the pages (some out of order) to the book. It’s slated for release sometime next year. Warning as some of these are out of order as they sadly loaded up that way. Apologies. I will also add that there is obviously no text yet, so following along and trying to make any sense out of any of it at the moment is most likely a waste of time. That along with the fact that these pages are straight up strange. It’s one of the main reasons I fell in love with them. The style is so out there and some of the pages are stunning.
Anyway, enjoy the selection as my heart breaks. The good news is that by not committing to this, it saves me a boatload of cash as the numbers we were discussing were not chump change. That along with the fact of how would I display 4 complete issues?!? Oh…and one of the pages is missing forever as he sold it off a while back. Who the hell knows where that is?!? That would kinda drive me a bit nuts…
Anyway…enjoy. Some of my favorites include the stained glass pages, the strange cosmic looking Spidey pages, and….well…lots of others. Enjoy…as I let the tears fall.
