Just unpacked a super sweet package from CGC, the comic grading company. These 3 beauties luckily all came back with the lovely grade of 9.8. Perfection!!!
These are the super cool King Spawn #1 variant. But these specific copies are a little extra special as they were part of a sweet little promotion the Spawn creator Todd McFarlane conjured up.
Basically, this is a 1:250 variant. What that means is retailers has to place an order for 250 “regular” copies of this book, just to be able to snag one of these 1:250 variants. That eliminates lots of shops right off the bat as 250 copies of a book with a $5.99 cover price equals a lot of funds to tie up…even at wholesale which ends up around 50% off.
However, I see the potential in it as Spawn has a very loyal following. So we ordered one for the shop, one for a customer, and one for myself. Also, The answer to your question is yes…I’m sitting on a lot of regular copies…
McFarlane ended up counting however many he needed to send out to shops which ended up being 1697, signed and individually numbered em, and sent em off to us retailers who qualified. They came complete with a COA that CGC would accept for the yellow Signature Series label.
So once we received em, I had a short time to pack em up and send em to Florida for grading. Luckily, Todd’s team did a great job plucking tasty crisp copies, and they all came back with a 9.8 which is what I was hoping for. He’s even holding some back to replace any retailers copies that arrived trashed. The remainder after all is said and done, are supposed to be removed from circulation forever. Hope that means destroyed. That’s super cool and show’s host commitment to make sure the retailers who are spending fat stack, remain happy.
These slabs come with the yellow Signature Series label as McFarlane worked out a deal for retailers to be able to submit the books within 30 days of receiving along with that COA. That’s a big deal as CGC normally doesn’t offer that type of deal. I hope they consider more of this going forward.
These are currently fetching around $1200-$1500 beans although I expect in the coming years as the glut of the copies available thins…their prices will rise. We shall see.
So all in all, my total cost to obtain 1 of these ends up around $750. With that comes 250 regular copies of which there are several different covers, and 5 copies of the 1:50 ratio variant. I’ll be able to piece out of that stuff to cover my investment leaving the slab perfectly fine to fall into the HODL pile.
