Damn! I fell again to ego's snare,
The trap that waits so patiently,
With fare arrayed so temptingly,
Found nowhere else, but there.

I thought I'd freed my heart of hearts,
From that which chains my empathy,
From that which freezes sympathy,
From that master of self-centered arts.

Heaven knows I've tried before,
Cried and prayed that freedom last,
But no, alas, as was before, as in the past,
I find myself in ego's grasp, once more.
