Hello, my lovely internet people! How are you? Last week I visited my favorite place in the whole city, A&B Book Café. It's a multifaceted place that serves as a restaurant, café, bookstore, and library, so I've been going every afternoon to read a book I found in the library that I really like. I always have a delicious cup of cappuccino while I enjoy reading, but on Saturday, when I invited my sister over for lunch for her birthday (she also usually goes to read in the library there), I had the chance to finish reading this gem. So I went to the shelf and found it in its usual spot. It seems I was the only one reading it! 😄

I'm referring to Ghostgirl by Tonya Hurley. This is a young adult novel with a very captivating story, so it's a very quick read. It tells the story of Charlotte Usher, one of those girls who are never taken seriously. While at school, she feels completely invisible to everyone, especially to her crush, Damen Dylan. Therefore, she does nothing but dream of being popular and at least having Damen's friendship. But one day, this feeling becomes a reality when she chokes on a gummy bear, leading to a sudden and absurd death. However, death is no obstacle for Charlotte. Her desire for popularity and to win Damen's heart is so strong that it becomes the unfinished business that binds her to this earth, causing her to become a ghost.
Me refiero a Ghostgirl de Tonya Hurley, esta es una novela juvenil con una historia muy atrapante, así que se lee muy rápido, nos cuenta la historia de Charlotte Usher, una de esas chicas que jamás son tomadas en cuenta para nada, así que mientras está en el colegio se siente completamente invisible ante los demás, en especial ante su amor platónico, Damen Dylan, por lo tanto ella no hace otra cosa más que soñar con ser popular y al menos tener la amistad de Damen, pero un día esta sensación se vuelve realidad ya que se atragantó con un caramelo, un osito de gomita, llevándola a tener una muerte tan repentina como absurda, sin embargo la muerte no es un impedimento para Charlotte, su deseo de popularidad y de conquistar a Damen es tan fuerte que se convierte en el asunto pendiente que la ata a la tierra, haciendo que ella se convierta en un fantasma
The novel has a little bit of everything: suspense and even moments of humor. I remember that one of the parts I enjoyed reading most was the body-swap with Scarlet (it's a bit of a cliché nowadays, but equally infallible for creating confusing, hilarious, or interesting situations). Furthermore, this also allows the characters to step out of their comfort zone and risk experiencing things beyond their own protective shell, something that teenagers find very difficult, especially when they have been very closed off or withdrawn. But at the same time, the whole book speaks to that need teenagers have for social acceptance, even if they don't express it openly. They need to be part of a group, but at the same time, we also find important reflections on sincere friendship and critiques of the superficiality that can lead us to make mistakes.
La novela tiene de todo un poco: suspenso y hasta sus momentos de comicidad, recuerdo que una de las partes que más disfruté leer fue lo del cambio de cuerpos con Scarlet (es un recurso un poco cliché hoy en día pero igualmente infalible para crear situaciones confusas, hilarantes o interesantes) además, esto también permite que los personajes salgan de su zona de confort y se arriesguen a experimentar más allá de su propia coraza de protección, algo que a los adolescentes les cuesta mucho, en especial cuando han sido muy cerrados o retraídos, pero al mismo tiempo todo el libro nos habla de esa necesidad que tienen los adolescentes por ser aceptados socialmente, a pesar de que no lo expresen abiertamente, ellos necesitan formar parte de un grupo, pero al mismo tiempo también encontramos reflexiones importantes sobre la amistad sincera y criticas a la superficialidad que nos puede conducir a cometer errores.
Something I absolutely must mention is that the book's layout is wonderful; it perfectly complements the book's gothic aesthetic, with its pink and black tones, and the cover is very Tim Burton-esque, so it also fits seamlessly with the novel's style. At the beginning of some chapters, there are famous quotes or excerpts from poems and songs, like this verse from the song "Language is a Virus" by the American violinist, singer, and poet Laurie Anderson: "And there was a beautiful view, but no one could see because everyone on the island was saying, 'Look at me! Look at me! Look at me! Look at me!'"
Algo que tengo que mencionar obligatoriamente es que la maquetación dele libro es maravillosa, va acorde con la estética gótica del libro, con tonos rosa y negro, y la portada es muy del estilo de Tim Burton, así que también va en cohesión con el estilo de la novela. Al inicio de algunos capítulos tiene frases célebres o extractos de poemas y canciones como esta estrofa de la canción "Language is a Virus" de la violinista, cantante y poetisa estadounidense Laurie Anderson "Y había una hermosa vista, pero nadie podía ver porque todos en la isla estaban diciendo: ¡Mírenme! ¡Mírenme! ¡Mírenme! ¡Mírenme!"
This speaks to superficiality and the need for attention. We often miss out on important things because we want to stand out, out of vanity, and meanwhile life goes by, leaving us completely empty, because in wanting the world to focus on us, we lose ourselves, we lose our essence and authenticity.
Esto nos habla de la superficialidad y necesidad de atención, muchas veces nos perdemos de cosas importantes por querer destacar, por vanidad, y mientras tanto la vida pasa y pasa, dejándonos completamente vacíos, porque al querer que el mundo se enfoque en nosotros, nos perdemos a nosotros mismos, perdemos nuestra esencia y autenticidad.
The characters are not very deep, some may even seem one-dimensional or superficial, and therefore there is not much development, except for the protagonist, Charlotte, in her we do see a great change, an evolution that leads her to be a much better person, even after death.
