Hi, internet folks – how’s it going? Today I want to talk about what’s becoming one of my favourite series, and it’s none other than *Beastars*, a Netflix series inspired by the manga of the same name.
In a society of anthropomorphic animals divided into herbivores and carnivores, a tension arises that is an open secret: how do the carnivores manage not to eat their herbivore neighbours? By eating eggs (donated by hens for this purpose) and certain drugs distributed by the government, but… this measure does not always work… …leading to the first crime that kicks off the series: a pupil at Cherryton School is murdered by what is believed to be a carnivore, bringing the uncomfortable question that everyone would rather ignore right out into the open…
Meanwhile, Legoshi, a grey wolf, begins to feel drawn to Haru, a dwarf rabbit, and although it seems a little strange and unlikely given the difference in their species and circumstances, he doesn’t seem to mind, seeking to be close to her and protect her.
Although the story centres on animals, the characters are so well-constructed and developed that it’s very easy to identify with one of them; what’s more, they’re so diverse that it makes you realise just how complicated it is to portray the everyday problems of our society alongside the issues that animals might face, depending on their species. It’s fascinating.
To be honest, I’m only just into the first series, but I’m clearly fascinated by the main characters. On the one hand, Legoshi – despite looking quite intimidating on the outside – is so adorable, so kind and helpful, always offering a hand and looking out for everyone. On the other hand, I really identify with Haru because of her personality; and speaking of Haru, I feel she’s been singled out in many forums, however, I feel that the way she desperately seeks love (even if it isn’t the healthiest approach) highlights her lack of affection; she’s been mistreated, rejected and marginalised, and because of this she desperately seeks to not feel so alone – physically, that’s the only form of attention she’s ever received; it’s the only way she’s seen as an equal rather than as a fragile, defenceless little rabbit. Her loneliness makes me sad, but I can relate to her optimistic nature, her quiet cheerfulness and her kindness.
On the other hand, I love how the series depicts the problems of our society as embodied in this universe – the hypocrisy of society reflected in Louis, for example, a rich and popular ‘deer’ at school who appears perfect and beyond reproach, but who secretly seeks refuge in Haru’s arms, where he can be himself without having to pretend to be perfect all the time; however, his ambition and the shame it would bring upon him in society if he were to date a poor rabbit of dubious reputation lead him to keep Haru in the shadows and use her only as an escape and a refuge.
Then there is the other side of society, the black market, a place where herbivore meat is sold so that carnivores can satisfy their craving for meat and, during the day, live peacefully alongside their neighbours without attacking them – because, in fact, that meat is not obtained through murder but by stealing corpses from hospitals. And this is where the question I posed at the beginning arises: how do carnivores cope without meat? What happens if they cannot control their instincts? This is explored here specifically from the perspective of the suffering these animals are subjected to.
Everything about this series is so psychological, so moral, and it makes you ask yourself lots of really interesting questions that also lend themselves to debate, as they’re a reflection of our society. Metaphor after metaphor, it makes you feel a sense of connection and reflect on many things around you, or even on the society we live in. I’ve only watched a few episodes so far and I’m already fascinated by it; I’d highly recommend it, and I hope you’ll give it a watch.
