Another weekend project

This past weekend, my family completed a project that had been put off due to weather for the past few weeks. We have finally completed it.

I love blueberries and strawberries. The best way to get them is to grow them yourself. This way, you know exactly what has been applied to the fruit before you consume it.

Several years ago, we bought a house with two blueberry bushes, and after around ten years of having annual fruit, I have missed not having my fresh blueberries.

I have tried three times already to grow blueberries in my Tennessee soil, and all three times have failed.

Last year, my son-in-law planted blueberries at his home using a special soil mixture and adding acid-producing fertilizer, and he has been successful in producing flourishing plants.

So this year will be my year.

Early in the spring, we ordered two plants from a garden supply company that I have used for years and have always found to be reputable.

The plants did not ship until July, and they arrived without notice and just happened to be delivered while we were at the beach.
The plants sat in the hot sun for 3 days. The plants did not survive.

So we were able to find plants from another vendor, and now we have two plants that look strong and healthy. We just need to get them in the ground.

No job can be done correctly without a boss figure, so we had our foreman oversee the project.

First thing was to build small boxes to surround the plant areas. We built these using cedar fence boards so they will last a while. We built two 3' x 3'ft. And one 3'by 6'ft. boxes

Since we were making boxes for the blueberries, we decided to also make a box for my strawberries that I had planted in a tiered planter.

Next came making up the soil mixture consisting of organic peat moss, compost, and garden soil.

My son-in-law really gets into his projects.

Next, we transferred the organic soil mixture into the planting beds. We added some organic slow release sulpher to help increase the acidity or actually decrease the soil pH. We then hydrated it well.

Now was the time to get the plants into the soil.

This was an all hands on deck project. No one was excused from the manual labor.

The finished product was acceptable by all of us, most importantly by my wife.

I am looking forward to next years fruitful harvest.
