I'm back on this wonderful community to share some of the projects of my makeshift workshop. This is a section of my blog I call Woodworking Wednesdays. In today's entry, I want to show some of the process of making backs and tops for Venezuelan Cuatros.
Raw materials

We start we the cut pieces of Cedar (cedrela odonata). I have enough to make 2 backs and 3 tops. Of course, there are more pieces involved in the process of making a complete instrument, but all the steps necessary for it take a while.
The main idea behind this pairings of wood is to use everything that has a straight grain or as straight as it can be for the tops and any other piece for the backs. It is a thing of acoustics and resistance to motion.
But the first step here is gluing the process together to make something similar to the last photo above. Let's get to it!
Setting up the Pairs

I had already selected which pieces will be paired with which. This is an important process. It requires using your ears and tap tests to listen to the timbre of wood. Each wood has its own acoustic properties. Even pieces cut for the same slab have different tone qualities. The idea is to pair two prices with similar sounds.
With this out of the picture, we need to have a straight edge on both of them to get a tight fit when we apply the glue. For this new use a wood planer. To check on the fit of the joint, we hold the ñeices together against any source of light and check if there's any light coming through this point.
It's important to understand that this process requires time and patience. If you rush the use of the planer, you'll end up taking too much material from any of the pieces. This will result on a way to short top or back. Check as many times as needed before taking any shavings out of the wood.
On the Jig

There are many different jigs used in luthieroe to get this job done. This is the one in have. You put the pieces of wood and use some chord to press then together. Then, with the help of wedges, you can press the pieces down to avoid any irregularities while gluing them.
This is also the time where you can add any kind of ornament between the back pieces. Also, I wanted to test something and used some masking tape to put all three tops at once in the jig.

It works every time. Well, I did the backs one at a time. But since I wanted to have everything ready, I put the tops there at once since they don't have any ornaments in the middle. I gotta say it got a bit hard to separate them after taking them out of the jig. However, after doing so, they all came out pretty good.
This is the start of some new projects. Maybe not all will be used right away, but it's always good to have some pieces ready if a commission comes by. That way we can get work done quickly!

Fondos y Tapas Armónicas

Estoy de regreso en esta comunidad maravillosa para mostrarles un poco de los proyectos del taller. Esta sección de mi blog se llama Miércoles de Carpintería. El día de hoy, les traigo un poco del proceso de cómo se unen los fondos y tapas armónicas de los cuatros venezolanos.

En esta ocasión tenemos estas piezas de cedro criollo (cedrela odonata). Hay suficiente para hacer dos fondos y tres tapas. Por supuesto, el proceso de terminar un instrumento requiere muchas más piezas y tiempo.
La idea en este paso es parear las piezas de acuerdo a la orientación del grano de la madera. Todo lo que tenga un grano recto o tan recto como pueda ser, será destinado a las tapas; el resto, se utiliza para los fondos. Esto responde a las propiedades acústicas de la madera y su resistencia al movimiento.
El primer paso es pegar estás piezas. Sin embargo, primero tenemos que prepararlas para que se lleguen a ver como en la última foto.
Preparando los pares

Ya había seleccionado cuáles piezas irían juntas. Esto es importante porque requiere usar los oídos para escuchar el timbre de cada pieza. La madera tiene propiedades acústicas que pueden variar aunque las piezas vengan de la misma tabla. La idea es tener pares con sonidos similares.
Luego de hacer esto, necesitamos enderezar los bordes de las piezas para lograr una unión fuerte. Para esto utilizamos un cepillo y removemos material de ambas partes. Para revisar nuestro progreso, podemos sujetar ambias piezas juntas hacia una fuente de luz y ver si la luz pasa a través de esta unión.
Este proceso toma tiempo y requiere paciencia. Si nos apuramos con el cepillo, terminaríamos con unas piezas muy pequeñas por remover mucho material. Hay que revisar y remover material de manera inteligente.
Usando un útil

Hay muchos útiles para completar este trabajo. Este es el mío. Se colocan las piezas sobre este y se utiliza una cuerda para hacer presión y juntarlas. Luego, se colocan unas cuñas sobre la unión para evitar que las piezas se levanten. Esto nos asegura un pegado uniforme.
En este punto es donde se colocan los adornos que hayamos pensado para el fondo. Además, en esta ocasión quise probar si era posible juntar más de una tapa sobre el útil.

Siempre funciona. Bueno, los fondos se pegaron uno a la vez. Pero como quería terminar de trabajar antes, puse todas las tapas de una vez. Para evitar que se pegaran entre si, coloqué un trozo de cinta de enmascarar en las uniones. Esto solo es posible si no hay adornos en el medio de las piezas. Fue un poco difícil separarlas, pero luego de hacerlo, salieron bastante bien.
Esto marca el comienzo de varios proyectos. Quizá no las use todas de una vez, pero nunca sobran piezas listas. Si salen algunos encargos, esto me facilitaría el trabajo.
