The past week has been weirdly cold, and that combined with the annoyance of completing Australian tax returns (which is a serious pain in the arse as a freelancer... and even worse when you are a freelancer with crypto) has meant that I've not really had much time for gardening in the recent past. However, the occasional bursts of sun in between the deluges of rain has meant that the garden is growing quite quickly... which is a mixed blessing, as there are also patches of long grass and weeds that need to be dealt with when I get back my time in November.

The most pleasing part is the tulips and various bulbs that have managed to mostly thrive and bloom... I will have to look up what to do with the bulbs now that they are done. I think I'll likely leave them in the ground for the following year... but I need to see if I need to do anything with the blooms and the rest of the green bits. Sadly, the second row didn't manage to do much... and I will likely dig those up and move them so that they collect more rain as they were planted under the eaves of the house, and I likely didn't quite give them enough water for them to realise that it was time to wake up!

So, just a few weeks ago, I had pruned this tree/bush back quite severely... and look! It has really taken to the regrowth with lots and lots of new shoots and leaves. I'll probably trim it back again at the end of summer... but for the moment, it is really bushing up nicely, in stark contrast to the spindly version that I had hacked back earlier!

Sadly, its neighbour plant isn't doing quite as well... likely due to the fact that it is more in the shade... and even more so with the new growth on the plant next door.

Near the bins, the little tree has also taken well to the pruning, with lots of new leaves and shoots coming up to replace the pruned ones. In time, I think this will have a better shape... but we will need to keep an eye on it, as it is a bit of a magnet for caterpillars, and the last summer season saw it lose most of its leaves to the little monsters!

Likewise with this larger version... it was covered in caterpillars and had been almost completely stripped bare. I have cleared the ground underneath in preparation for some lavender bush transplants... we will take cuttings from our parents in law's garden and see if we can help them take hold here. The tree itself is still a question mark... my wife isn't quite sure if she wants it or not.

The herbs have also gone quite out of control with the superb growing weather... the parsley in particular has been quite wild! I will start trimming them down and drying the leaves in our dehumidifier so that we have lots for the winter months.

Out the front, the candidates that were earmarked by my wife for a severe pruning have not yet recovered or grown new shoots. There are little hints of growth, but it might be another season before we really see the results of the pruning. It does make the pathway up to our front door quite stark and bare though!

... and of course, in the front area... the only one that really made some decent regrowth was the spiky needly one... sigh...

... and them plum/pear/something tree in the front that was heavily pruned back when we first moved in nearly a year and a bit ago... well, it didn't see much signs of life last year... but this year, there promising batches of new growth! I'm hopeful that this will grow to be a nice feature in our front corner area!
