Marking Use of Street Gutter Debris.jpg

This week was supposed to have been a week in the garden and digging up trenches for the rest of the retaining wall and holes for the planting of fruit trees. However, it has been a bit too rainy (and bloody cold...) and so it has been much more indoor work instead. However, on a brief warmer and drier day, I did pop out to sort out all the street gutter debris that had built up over the last couple of months...

... our block has three street sides, and is a bit downhill of a large rise... so, it does see quite a bit of water flowing down the gutter channels... well, it would if there wasn't quite so much debris from our trees pushing the water out! In the summer, I walk up and down with a blower to shove it all back onto our land... but in the wetter months, that doesn't work very well as the wet leaves and debris doesn't unstick easily!

But, after raking in a few chunks... I noticed that there was some pretty decent soil in there.... the water and then the subsequent baking in the sun had broken down quite a lot of the debris that was under the top layer, resulting in a rich dark sort of silt. And I figured that I could use that silt to cover up some of the smaller plants to help protect them against the frost and cold. Who knows if that will work, but I'm going to try!

So, as you can see... there is quite a lot of the smaller dark soil and broken down bits of leaves and bark and twigs all mashed up... I guess it also heaps to have cars driving on them to help smash it all up! In the end, I got two full wheelbarrows of the stuff!

... which went to bedding around the smaller plants to help with the winter cold and frost. Hopefully, the extra layer will help to keep a bit of heat in... and that the nutrients (well, I'm hoping that the dark silt is rich in nutrients!) will help them through the winter months and onwards into spring!

Who knows if that will be the case, but I'm trying it out... and if it seems to work, then I will have a use for all that gutter debris!

Hopefully I will be able to return back to hole and trench digging in the next couple of weeks!
