Hello needleworkmonday community, happy and blessed Monday in family unity, April has begun and with it the hottest time in the area where I live, this coincides with Easter and is the perfect time to visit the beaches and cool off from the heat, as I mentioned earlier one of the tasks of the sewing course for the final exhibition was to make garments related to the beach, for the closing of the course I made several garments including a beautiful reversible hat ideal for visits to the beach or daily outings, as it protects us from the sun.

It is a simple project to make, the fabrics I used were printed microfiber and Denim stretch in two shades of blue.

Once the pieces of the hat were marked I cut according to the pattern: 4 pieces for the lapel (2 in denim and 2 in microfiber), 4 pieces for the cup (2 in denim and 2 in microfiber) and finally 2 circles that will be the main part of the hat; to give a different model I combined the denim circle with microfiber and the microfiber circle with light blue and navy blue denim.

I joined with straight stitch the pieces that make up the cap's flap and crown, then I repeated the front part with straight stitch to reinforce the seam and obtain a better finish.

To assemble the hat, I pinned the cup and the circle right sides together, folding the circle in half, marking a point and placing the cup there so that the seams coincide with the marked points, then I sewed with a straight stitch and zig zag to reinforce the seam.

Once the cup is sewn, I pinned the flap, combining light blue with dark blue for one side of the hat, for the other side I sewed the microfiber pieces printed with floral motif using straight stitch.

Once both sides of the hat were finished, I faced right sides together, pinned and stitched along the contour of the flap, leaving a 7 cm opening to turn the piece over, then closed the seam and re-stitched.

To give color to the lapel I used several straight seams with different colored threads, leaving about 1 cm wide between each one, this way the lapel of the denim hat looks nicer and is stronger with these seams.

When combining in this hat rigid fabric (microfiber) and stretch (denim), I had a little difficulty to sew the printed flap; I had a little difficulty sewing the printed flap, because when passing through the fabric press, the stretch fabrics tend to stretch a little and at the time of joining the pieces is a little bigger, the flap was left over approximately 0.5 cm which I had to cut and then sew again the union of the cup with the flap, despite the difficulty I was able to finish the hat and I really liked the result, but I learned that each new project leaves a great lesson, do not combine rigid fabrics with stretch because it is somewhat difficult to sew them because of the elongation that each one has, the idea of using denim is to give volume and firmness to the hat.
