I remember going through some challenges during my school days and my dad gave me one interesting advice. He said something along the line of "nothing worth doing ever comes without challenge and the existence of challenges, as well as overcoming them makes it worth doing". According to him, challenges are an essential part of the growth process and regardless of the field, overcoming them is as important as the end result because they are often the objectives or hurdles along the way.

In recent times, the cryptocurrency industry has experienced some challenges in the form of billionaires coming into the field. The industry has probably created a few inhouse billionaires but in recent times, renowned billionaires like Elon Musk and Ray Dalio have come into the mix.

I must admit that at the start, seeing Microstrategy CEO Michael Saylor actively shilling and promoting Bitcoin through his platform was very exciting. For the most part, he hasn't made it about himself and has focused on the important things, while being an open Bitcoin Maximalist. I honestly have no qualms with his stance, even though I know that in the long run, he will go down the same route that other maxis go.

Elon Musk, on the other hand, came into the scene through his weird and mildly funny interest in Dogecoin. That interest reverberated throughout the world and turned Dogecoin into a movement. Again, that's something I have nothing against, and my opinion doesn't matter in the general scheme of things anyway, since money and influence matter more than anything.

Elon's activities have however brought a new problem to the industry that while not being entirely bad, makes the industry unsustainable and seem quite scammy. The issue is the wave of sensationalism that has somehow gripped the industry and threatens to turn things on its head.

It's not about you

Elon's recent rant about Bitcoin and the climate that lead to a mini depression in the midst of the bull run is a fine example of the problem we're facing. His constant tweets about Bitcoin's effect on the climate that subtly sounded like he rescinded his Bitcoin views, even though he didn't dump any, kind of elaborates the point.

In hindsight, we all know it like anyone else that there was something at play. leofinance@leofinance through its Twitter account already alluded to this ostensibly subtle foul play through this tweet that pretty much summarises the situation.

The billionaires have realized that they're late to the party but like most rich pricks, they don't want to be on the losing end, so why not crumble the price before buying?

I mean, let's face it, most of these guys didn't get rich by being boy scouts. I might be wrong but I don't think there's any billionaire that got there by playing by the rules. They will use any dirty trick at their disposal to get their wins because that's just how the game goes.

To be completely honest, I'm not entirely mad at them because while it is unfair to the common man, it is what it is. They have the power to ruin the livelihood of ordinary people because they want to add more money to their already rich portfolios. I mean, isn't that exactly what capitalists do anyway? It's like reverse Robinhood.

Immunity

The big boys still have their grip on the market and that will not be going away anytime soon. Despite being an industry that's over $2 trillion in market capitalisation, these hollywood billionaires are still new to the game.

We're still experiencing some level of shock as we come to terms with these sorts of players in the market. However, in the coming years when the crypto industry creates more "homegrown" billionaires like Vitalik Butterin, we will develop a shock absorber for these situations.

For now, we're still very much at the whims of these billionaires and the most we can do is react to capitalise on their influence. Just like always, it is about picking your moment and then hoping for the best, after you've made your decision.

In the long run, things will be different and the industry will learn from these events. As time goes on, billionaires will have less impact on the market and the industry will have overcome a challenge on its way to creating a more decentralized and free market for everyone to thrive.
