Yesterday was probably one of the most stressful days of my life and I am so glad to have finally got it mostly sorted out. We still have a little bit more to do before we can truly say we're ready but so far so good, we've made progress.
We started the day at Warri, where we said goodbye to the parents and got a flight to Warri. The 50-minute flight to Abuja was originally scheduled for 9am, got pushed to 10:10 but we actually took off around 11:20.
It's crazy how these airlines don't actually offer anything other than a pointless apology after the delay. What if I had a surgery by 11am, I would have died in the plane.
Anyway, the positives outweigh the negatives because it was a largely smooth flight with some turbulence along the way. It was nothing to rattle because let's face it, I am already rattled by my fear of flying.
I won't say I have a deep fear of flying because in Nigeria, at least, it is much safer due to the issues on the road. However, I must add that if I live in a society where road travel is safer, I will do everything in my power to avoid flying.
It's strange that I have this weird fear of flying. I think a big part of the fear comes from my background in aerospace engineering.
I hate and love sitting at the window. I hate it because I get to play out scary thoughts about what could go wrong based on things I've seen in Aircraft accident investigation but at the same time, I love it because when you look at the World from way high, you'll find that all our worries and everything we hold dearly are quite small.
I won't lie, flying is scary but I advise everyone to give it a chance and experience looking at the clouds. It's a weirdly calming experience that makes time move faster.
Speaking of time, now that we're in Abuja, it means that our next flight will be the longest of my life. We're taking a connecting flight that lands at Istanbul for a layover and then continues to London a few hours later.
Safe to say that this will be the longest flight of my life. I'm looking forward to getting it all sorted and adjusting to our life.
