Let's start the fun from today....this is fun friday and I must say that I had a lot of fun today in my element, yes you guessed right ...educating young minds.

We took a trip to the world of science today, when I say we, I'm referring to my students and I. Actually today wrapped up our science week and it was so much fun.
Firstly, we began with practicals of the skeletal system of small mammals. We wanted a natural model to keep in the laboratory for reference purpose. The students were grouped and assigned with the task of getting the bones no offense to Mr Bones please, hehe.

One group handled a rat specie known as Rattus rattus while the other group handled a domestic male fowl. Getting the bones involved a lot of process but I appreciate the team work of these students...they mde it look stress free.

Today itself being the wrap up of the science week, the students decided to experiment with a plant tissue to observe the process of Osmosis. For this to be effective, we needed both hypertonic solution and hypotonic solution (strong and weak solution), plus a plant tissue and we opted for Dioscoreae sp. and Toemoea batatas ( yam and sweet potatoes). Hope you didn't cut your tongue while pronouncing those scientific names, hehe. We cut into the tissues to make it semi-permeable for the movement of water molecules. Once again the students rallied round cooperatively and it was done in no time seamlessly.
The last thing we did for the wrap up was to view a tissue to observe its cells under a simple or light microscope. For this we used an onion, microscope and our eyes.
The students took turns in viewing the cells and cries of "uh's and ah's could be heard from them as they enjoyed viewing the cells of an onion. It was so much fun and rewarding.
