Major food supply chains are looking into working with IBM to utilize the blockchain technology to help make the food supply chain safer by being able to track where our food comes from globally. Otherwise it could take weeks to determine the exact location of where the food came from.
If any contaminated foods are identified, using the blockchain technology will help identify the source of the food supply within seconds. More than 200 diseases are spread through food. These can include from the farm, transportation, production and the preparation.
The blockchain would allow the entire food supply chain from growers all the way up to consumer’s access to their food information including where it came from to where it has traveled before reaching the store shelves. The food supply chains are also working with IBM on more blockchain technology benefits that may be available for the global food sector.
Blockchains are now being used on transactions for everything from flowers, real estate and trade finance, to education, insurance and medical services.
IBM is introducing the first fully integrated, enterprise-grade production blockchain platform, as well as consulting services, that will allow more organizations to quickly activate their own business networks.
