Sometimes I'm afraid of the dark and avoid putting myself into situations where I'm alone at night; it's not altogether safe for a girl to be out and about alone at night, and I don't really want to be either, I'd much rather be with someone...and that someone is my guy who is not at all afraid of the dark.
My guy calls the dark, his friend, maybe he's a ninja, and he feels comfortable at night whether it's in the city or way out in the countryside and his confidence makes me feel confident too. A couple weekends ago we felt the need for some space, to be away from the city and the routine of our daily lives but a weekend getaway was not possible so we decided on the next best thing...the dark.
I took this image myself
We found ourselves on a property almost 45 miles away from any towns and the lights they produce. We arrived in the late afternoon, unloaded the firewood we'd brought and went about organising a fire pit which we'd cook some food on, brew coffee and then sit beside, huddled together in blankets for the evening. As the fire burned low, its comforting crackling lulling us, we snuggled into our blankets and laid there both looking up towards the sky and the thousands of stars up there twinkling away as stars often do.
We remained silent for a while, counted shooting stars and then...well, I think I'll not continue that part of the story here, it's private.
It was a moment we both needed, time away from the pressures of life that, no matter how hard we try to avoid it, weigh on us sometimes. We needed the space away from everyone else, to see the sky drain of colour as we watched, the smell of wood smoke as it rose on hot air and those twinkly stars that popped out in the darkness shimmering and glittering down upon us. We needed to feel small and insignificant in the great universe we live in...and to feel like the only people on the planet. It was a beautiful night and the remembrance of it makes me smile.
I was thinking about it earlier today and decided I'd share some music with stars as the theme, which you can find below. I don't know if other people place as much importance small moments like that night by the fire under the canopy of stars, and it doesn't matter anyway, it's important and beautiful to us and I could think of no better man to share that beauty with than my guy.
