Cazza in colour

I guess I'm not the only photographer that overthinks their images. I do feel in these days of *Instagram *and Tik Tok that photography has been dumbed down a little. Don't get me wrong I am under no illusion that I am a budding Rankin. I know I'm pretty much an average jobbing photographer.

But I do have a bit of (misplaced?) pride in my work. I like it to be as good as I can make it. And this is where the over-thinking comes into play. I open an image in Lightroom or Photoshop and sometimes I really don't know where the editing process will end. These shots, I took to present as black and white images. Of these first two shots the first one is the original colour, edited as I wanted it and then the mono conversion (and a bit of a crop).

I tend to edit. re-edit, edit again, or take it back and start over. I really don't have time for doing this, but unless I have a specific outcome in mind I will play away, often having multiple "finished" images. I can guarantee that the one I end up posting will not be my favourite further down the line. Sometimes doing a quirky edit - because I think it might work - can waste hours of my time until I decide I don't like an image and put it on the back burner.

It's expensive in storage, I have portable hard drives, cloud storage and, from way back, DVD's full of images. I did have a major clear out a few weeks back and by being ruthless I managed to free up terabytes of space. The point being, perhaps if I was more focussed with my editing, and plan before I start the post processing, I wouldn't waste time (or space) and perhaps be a more efficient photographer.

But then, where is the fun in that? And talking to photographer friends I am not to different from a lot of them. One friend has a system where he edits and then numbers as follows. Pic 1, Pic 1 WIP, Pic 1 WIP-v2, Pic 1, finished, Pic 1 Finished V2, and so on. My storage spaces have directories that are full of similar named images. Perhaps a lot of us are not as efficient as we would like to be.

About me:

I can mostly be found shooting models, aviation, motorsports and, when I can, wildlife. But I enjoy most aspects of photography. You can find more of my work on the links below.
