Created in the year 430 a. C. by the famous sculptor Phidias, was in the temple of Zeus in Olympia, Greece. Its impressive work was destroyed some 800 years later, already in times of the Roman Empire, when the "pagan" cults were forbidden and all its images were eliminated.
Zeus was the god of gods, and as such was represented in that sculpture. It measured about 12 meters high, made of ivory and gold, and occupied the entire central aisle of the temple. According to the stories of the time, the statue showed Zeus with his naked torso and a band surrounding him. His gaze was fixed on something that was below him, surely the prayers of some person, to give the statue an aspect at once powerful but paternal.
