#There was a traitor who reported to the Dutch when Teuku Umar's troops rested.
Teuku Umar twice pretended to side with the Dutch in order to increase the strength of Aceh troops.
Toward the morning of 11 February 1899, exactly today 119 years ago, the news of the sadness made Cut Nyak Dhien mused. Her husband, Teuku Umar, died in a sudden battle against Dutch troops on the outskirts of Meulaboh.
Cut Nyak Dhien is of course very grieving, but he refuses to dissolve in grief. He had experienced similar situations in the past while lamenting the death of his previous husband, Ibrahim Lamnga, who also died at the hands of the invaders, on 29 June 1878.
This time, Cut Nyak Dhien does not want to waste time just to cry for the dead. He did not want the sacrifice of Teuku Umar in vain. Cut Nyak Dhien was determined to continue the struggle of her husband until the last drop of blood.
#war Since Young
Teuku Umar was born in Meulaboh in 1854. His father, Teuku Achmad Mahmud, was an uleebalang (regional head). While his mother came from the royal court in Meulaboh. In the book National Hero Encyclopedia compiled Julinar Said and friends (1995) mentioned, from his father's line, Teuku Umar bleed Minangkabau (p.14).
Between the Teuku Umar family and the rencong land is bound to be established since the first. Umar descendant of Datuk Makhudum Sati the confidant of Sultan Iskandar Muda (1607-1636), who was authorized to lead the Pariaman region of West Sumatra as part of the Aceh Sultanate at that time (Ragil Suwarna Pragolapati, Cut Nya Dien, Volume 1, 1982: 130).
Since 1873, when the Aceh War started to flare up, Teuku Umar took up arms to expel the occupiers from the Veranda of Mecca. At that time, he was only 19 years old. Her courage and agility made Umar's young prestige skyrocket. In fact, at that age he was believed to be the head of the village or the village leader.
Teuku Umar married Cut Nyak Dhien in 1880. Previously, Umar had two wives, Nyak Sofiah, the son of an uleebalang whom he married in 1874, then married again with Nyak Mahligai, the daughter of one respected leader of the Acehnese people, Panglima Sagi XXV Mukim.
Even so, Teuku Umar still ventured to apply Cut Nyak Dhien. Muchtaruddin Ibrahim (1996) in a book entitled Cut Nyak Din writes that Umar was deeply admiring the brave woman figure who was also her relative (p.38).
Teuku Umar's wedding with Cut Nyak Dhien was greeted with delight and celebrated with a lively ceremony. This news was also heard by the Dutch government in Kotaraja, Banda Aceh. They realize that marriage is the same as combining two potentially dangerous powers
#Gerak "Wild" Teuku Umar
Teuku Umar is not only an agile warrior in battle. He is also a very intelligent even though he never went to school. His unexpected and surprising tactics and maneuvers often amaze and confuse people, including his own wife, Cut Nyak Dhien.
In 1883, Teuku Umar made peace with the Dutch. He even entered the Dutch military service. Umar style is contrary to the character of his wife, Cut Nyak Dhien. Until the end of the Aceh War, Dhien would not submit to the foreign nation who had trampled his homeland. Yet, with compulsion, he agreed with Umar's steps despite following her husband's movements.
In 1884, a British-owned ship was stranded in the waters of Aceh. The ship named Nesisero (or Nisero) along with the captain and his entire crew was held hostage by the ruler of the region, Teuku Imam Muda Raja Teunom (Ibrahim, 1996: 48). King Teunom asked for a large ransom if he wanted the prisoners and his ship to be released.
The governor of Aceh, Laging Tobias, is panicked because this problem has worsened Dutch relations with Britain. Thus, Teuku Umar was asked to immediately overcome this problem because the Dutch are reluctant to pay ransom. Umar, a fellow Acehnese, is expected to soften Teuku Imam Muda Raja Teunom.
#Decided Homes Again
The return of Teuku Umar was greeted with joy and relief by Cut Nyak Dhien and the people of Aceh he led. Two years later, precisely on June 14, 1886, Teuku Umar led his troops ambushed Hok Canton ship which was also owned by the British. Umar stormed the ship on suspicion of transporting weapons to be sold illegally.
Britain was again angered and urged the Dutch to resolve the issue. The Netherlands, in order to improve relations with Britain after its previous failure, was forced to pay ransom to Teuku Umar for 25,000 ringgit (Mardanas Safwan, Teuku Umar, 2007: 22).
The financial strength of Aceh's troops is increasing again. However, in 1893, Umar and his 15 officers suddenly surrendered to the Dutch. Inevitably, Cut Nyak Dhien was both shocked and embarrassed even by her husband's behavior. However, Umar must have had a special strategy.
The Dutch still believe in Umar and receive him back. Umar's figure is very valuable and very influential. Moreover, according to Ibrahim Alfian (1987) in the War in the Way of God: the War of Aceh 1873-1912, quoted from Dr. Razali Muhammad Ali entitled "Strategy Muslihat Hero of Aceh" (Serambi Indonesia, 2016), Umar and his followers swore allegiance to the Dutch.
Teuku Umar was ordered to lead hundreds of fully armed Dutch soldiers to quell the resistance of the people of Aceh. Once again, Umar showed his skill in his tactics. In front of the Dutch eyes, he seemed to be really against his own people, but what really happened was not like that.
In fact, again the Dutch were beaten. Umar's army carried 880 weapons, 25,000 bullets, 500 kg of gunpowder, 5,000 kg of lead, cash, and other war equipment, to increase the strength of the people of Aceh (S.M. Dumadi, Know Our National Hero: Teuku Umar, 1975: 34).
#Getur Teuku Umar
Deceived two times made the Dutch very furious against Teuku Umar. In fact, this case led to the dismissal of Christoffel Deykerhoff, the governor of Aceh who served since 1892. His successor, Jacobus Augustinus Vetter, gave the ultimatum to hand back everything that Umar ran. However, the warning was ignored.
The Teuku Umar army itself grew stronger after joining the Polem Commander in 1898. The two great heroes of the rencong land together faced the ruler of the Sultan Darussalam Sultanate, Sultan Muhammad Daud Syah (1874-1903), to declare the oath of allegiance.
