Hello everyone
There are as many temples with amazing story as there are wonderful beaches in Phuket and today's temple is no exception to the rule. I will once again be your guide for this visit and I hope you will enjoy it. 🤭
In our previous temple visits, we went to Wat Nakaram, Phuket Town, Paying respects to the Big Buddha, Phuket and Wat Chalong, the gem of Phuket, all three having a very different history. This is also the case for today's temple, Wat Phra Thong (วัดพระทอง) or Wat Phra Phut is one of the famous ancient temples in Phuket with an amazing story about its half-buried Buddha statue.
From Phuket Town, take Thepkrasattri Road and drive up towards Phang Nga. Keep driving along the way until Thalang District Office, keeps right to slow down the car and drive straight for about 200 meters. You will see the entrance to the temple on the right-hand side of Soi Wat Phra Thong but it's unable to turn right. You have to make a U-turn in front then turn into Soi Wat Phra Thong, go straight for about 300 meters to reach the temple.
If you prefer you can take a minibus at the municipal fresh market, the Phuket-Thalang-Sarasin route costs 30 baht per person.
There are plenty of parking spaces within the temple grounds.
As it is often the case, stalls selling lottery tickets welcome you. Lottery is something that has been with Thai people for a long time, most of Thai people think that coming to make merit and paying homage to monks will bring good luck and may win a big prize. Lottery sellers know this well, so it is not uncommon to set up a lottery stand in front of the temple, which will sell very well rather than selling elsewhere.

วัดพระทองหรือวัดพระพุดเป็นหนึ่งในวัดโบราณ ที่มีชื่อเสียงในจังหวัดภูเก็ต เพราะมีเรื่องราวที่น่าอัศจรรย์ใจเกิดขึ้น ภายวัดนี้มีพระพุทธรูปเพียงครึ่งองค์เท่านั้น จากการเล่าขานสื่อต่อๆ กันมาถึงความเป็นมาของวัด ทำให้วัดแห่งนี้เป็นวัดที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ และประชาชนศรัทธามากๆ และเป็นหนึ่งในวัดที่ไม่ควรพลาดด้วยประการทั้งปวง เพื่อมาการไหว้สักการะขอพร เมื่อมาเยือนจังหวัดภูเก็ตจร้าาาาาา....

ประวัติคร่าวๆ บริเวณนี้เคยเป็นทุ่งนา และมีลำคลองไหลผ่าน ทำให้ชาวบ้านนำวัว ควายมากินหญ้าบริเวณนี้ และมีเรื่องที่เล่าขานกันต่อๆ มา คือมีเด็กชายได้นำควายมาหากินหญ้าที่บริเวณนี้ แต่ว่าหาที่ผูกเชือกควายไม่ได้ แล้วก็ไปจอคล้ายๆ ตอไม้ โผล่ขึ้นมาเหนือดิน ก็เลยได้นำเชือกควายไปผูกกับตอไม้ที่ว่า จากนั้นตัวเองก็กลับบ้าน ปรากฏว่าเมื่อกลับบ้านแล้ว เด็กชายก็รู้สึกไม่สบาย หลังจากนั้นก็เสียชีวิต ควายตัวที่ผูกไว้กับตอไม้ล้มตายด้วย
ผู้เป็นพ่อของเด็กชายก็ได้ฝันไปว่า ที่ลูกชายของเขาและควายต้องตาย ก็เพราะเอาเชือกควายไปผูกไว้กับเศียรพระพุทธรูป ตื่นเช้าขึ้นมาผู้เป็นพ่อก็ได้นำความฝันไปเล่าให้ชาวบ้านฟัง และได้ชวนกันไปดู ก็เห็นเป็นเศีรยพระพุทธรูป จึงได้ช่วยกันทำความสะอาด เมื่อเจ้าในสมัยนั้นทราบข่าว ก็ต้องการที่จะขุดพระพุทธรูปองค์นี้ขึ้นมา เพื่อนำมาประดิษฐานในที่เหมาะที่ควร แต่ว่าคนงานที่ไปขุดนั้นโดนผึ้งรุมต่อยตาย ไปหลายคน ทำให้ไม่สามารถขุดพระพุทธรูปขึ้นมาได้ จึงได้สร้างอุโบสถ์ครอบทับ ดังที่เห็นในปัจจุบันนี้
The temple houses an ancient half-buried golden Buddha statue called Luang Poh Phra Thong (Golden Buddha), whose history can be traced back to 1783 during the invasion of the Burmese troops. It is also known as Wat Phra Phud, meaning Temple of the protruding Buddha.
Its story begins when the location of the temple was a vast rice field. One day a boy took his buffalo into the rice field, tying it with a rope to a stump along the canal where the mud was stuck. When he returned home, the boy fainted and died and the buffalo tied to the stump that no one came to untie also died.
Later, the boy's father dreamed that the death of the child and the buffalo was due to the fact that the buffalo was tied with a rope to the Buddha's pedestal. So he asked his neighbors to come and help him clear the area by scrubbing the stumps along the canal, revealing part of a golden statue of Buddha that all the villagers then came to worship and venerate.
When the governor heard the news, he ordered that the Buddha statue be completely excavated. A swarm of deadly wasps then appeared, killing many of the villagers who tried to dig up the statue by injecting them with their poison. The governor then ordered to stop the excavation and to cover the ground to build a temple. The villagers continued to worship the half-buried Buddha while calling it Phra Phut because it is a Buddha statue that rises from the ground, just like Ket Mala.

In addition, within the temple compound, there is also a Buddhist forest garden. This is where large trees are planted to provide shade. Large trees have an important role in the teachings of the Buddha.
นอกจากจะได้มากราบไหว้ขอพระทองหรือพระผุดแล้ว ใกล้ๆ กับลานจอดรถก็จะมีสวนป่าพุทธธรรม ให้เราไปนั่งสงบจิต สงบใจ ใต้ร่มไม้ใหญ่อันรื่มรื่น ตามต้นไม้ก็จะมีหลักธรรมคำสอนของพระพุทธเจ้าติดอยู่ตามต้นไม้ หรือแม้แต่ภาพวาดต่างๆ เกี่ยวกับประวัติของพระพุทธเจ้าก็มีให้ศึกษา
