Brian May is expressing his concerns about the growing role of AI in songwriting.
The Queen guitarist recently shared his thoughts on this topic, stating, "I think by this time next year the landscape will be completely different. We won't know which way is up. We won't know what's been created by AI and what's been created by humans."
May believes that these upcoming years may mark a significant shift where humans lose control over music creation. He remarked, "Everything is going to get very blurred and very confusing, and I think we might look back on 2023 as the last year when humans really dominated the music scene. I really think it could be that serious, and that doesn't fill me with joy. It makes me feel apprehensive, and I'm preparing to feel sad about this."
He's not alone in his concerns. Sting, earlier this year, also voiced his doubts about AI-generated music, especially for songs meant to convey emotions. May acknowledges that AI has its merits in fields like science and technology but worries that its influence on music might have adverse effects.
"I think the whole thing is massively scary," he concluded, emphasizing the far-reaching implications of AI's role in music, which may be greater than initially anticipated.
For May, this situation is not just about his identity as "Brian May of Queen." He holds a Ph.D. in astrophysics, a field he pursued even before Queen's rise to fame. He completed his doctorate in 2007 and has contributed to NASA's New Horizons mission to Pluto. He even has an asteroid named after him, underscoring his multidimensional expertise beyond music.
