Documentary on the Last Beatles Song "Now and Then" Released
A 12-minute documentary film exploring the making of the final Beatles song, "Now and Then," has been unveiled. Directed and written by Oliver Murray, the documentary delves into the creation of this track, which is set to be released on November 2. It includes fresh insights from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sean Ono Lennon, Peter Jackson, and features archival footage of George Harrison.
The Background of "Now and Then"
"Now and Then" originated from a demo recorded by John Lennon before his tragic passing in 1980. Yoko Ono later presented this tape to the surviving members of the Beatles. In the mid-'90s, McCartney, Starr, and Harrison, with the collaboration of producer Jeff Lynne, took on "Now and Then" and other unreleased Lennon tapes. This collaboration resulted in two complete songs, "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love," which were featured on Anthology 1 and Anthology 2, respectively.
However, "Now and Then" remained unfinished primarily due to challenges with the demo's audio quality, until now.
"In 1995, after several days in the studio working on the track, George felt the technical issues with the demo were insurmountable and concluded that it was not possible to finish the track to a high enough standard," shared Olivia Harrison, George Harrison's widow, in an earlier press release. "If he were here today, [son] Dhani and I know he would have whole-heartedly joined Paul and Ringo in completing the recording of 'Now and Then.'"
In 2021, Peter Jackson's film team applied innovative de-mixing technology, as seen in the three-part documentary "The Beatles: Get Back," to Lennon's original demo tape. This technology allowed for the separation of the vocal track from the piano part, simplifying the creation of a new song. McCartney and Starr contributed new recordings, while Harrison's previously recorded acoustic guitar segments were incorporated.
Sean Ono Lennon commented on the collaborative effort, saying, "It was incredibly touching to hear them working together after all the years that Dad had been gone. It's the last song my dad, Paul, George, and Ringo got to make together. It's like a time capsule and all feels very meant to be."
This documentary sheds light on the intriguing journey of completing a song decades after it was first conceived, providing fans with a unique glimpse into the Beatles' creative process.
