Why Kix is Calling It Quits This Month
Kix, the Maryland rockers, are calling it quits after a whopping 45 years in the music biz. They're going out with a bang, though, performing their last gig on September 17 right in their hometown at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia. According to lead vocalist Steve Whiteman, it's about time to call it a day.
On a recent episode of SiriusXM's Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk, Whiteman spilled the beans, saying, "I don't want to go out sucking — I want to go out being pretty good." Age has been catching up with the band, and they've had their fair share of health scares, especially drummer Jimmy Chalfant's heart attack in 2021 followed by an onstage collapse last November.
Whiteman also shared his struggles with performing some fan-favorite tracks, like their Top 20 power ballad "Don't Close Your Eyes." He mentioned how his four-octave vocal range wasn't what it used to be, forcing him to change up his singing style. He clarified that he's not faking it, just adapting to still give fans a good show without them noticing the difference.
"There are nights, out of the past couple of years, where I've come offstage just humiliated because I can't sing 'Don't Close Your Eyes' like I used to, or I can't sing 'Cold Blood,'" Whiteman added. These are the songs the fans came to hear, and he felt it was time to hang up the mic if he couldn't do them justice anymore.
Despite the challenges, Whiteman expressed gratitude for the incredible response from fans for their farewell show. They initially expected around 4,000 to 5,000 attendees at the 15,000-seat Merriweather venue but have already exceeded 10,000. It's their way of saying a heartfelt thanks to their hometown fans for all the support and memories throughout their legendary career. They might be tired, but the love and appreciation keep them going.
