Interior ZEN.jpg

Today’s design is inspired by much of the music I listen to throughout the day, especially when I’m writing, but generally speaking I always have soft, relaxing songs playing, along with the sounds of water, such as rain, the sea, waterfalls and fountains. I really love the sense of calm it creates, which I often need; what’s more, this sort of music really helps me to concentrate, to focus on what I’m doing, and I also find it inspiring. It calms the mind and spirit, and for anyone who has ever practised meditation, this sort of music is ideal.

I was listening to this sort of music when symbolic images of balance, peace, harmony, nature and, above all, that inner sense of tranquillity appeared in my mind. I closed my eyes, just like the woman in the design, and simply devoted myself to feeling and imagining colours and that’s where the inspiration came from.

Design process

The design was created entirely in Photoshop CS6 without the use of AI, using 10 royalty-free images spread across 13 layers.

To create the background, I chose a soft watercolour-style image with a very light centre; on top of this, I placed two images dominated by a soft red colour. I stretched one of them to fill the design, and on the other I created a layer mask so that, using the gradient tool, I could blend them together in the centre. For both, I used the ‘Darken’ blend mode in the Layers panel.

I then worked on the image of the stacked rocks with the trees, flipping it and applying the ‘Darken’ blend mode. I selected the little woman, copied and pasted her onto a new layer with the ‘Hard Light’ blend mode. I created another layer just for the cherry tree and changed its blend mode to ‘Overlay’. I then placed the image of the Zen structure with the ‘Darken’ blend mode and the three images of rocks with circles in the sand, side by side, erasing the outlines and applying the ‘Spot Light’ and ‘Hard Light’ blend modes.

On two layers, I placed the lotus flowers in different positions and scales, using the ‘Lighter Colour’ blending mode and having previously erased the background; finally, on a layer that I placed after the background and beneath everything described above, I positioned the woman’s face using the ‘Darker Colour’ blending mode.

I send you all a big hello and see you next time.
Thanks for watching and reading this far.
