Life sometimes has other plans for a person, plans that were never envisaged, or even imagined, and which nevertheless require a great deal of adaptation in order to move forward.

There are events that simply happen in a person’s life, things that are neither sought after nor within our control. And just when everything seemed to be going well, not perfectly, perhaps, but at least on the right track, something happens that throws everything off balance. Something we’ve done nothing to bring about, as it is a chance occurrence, something that comes from outside ourselves and is beyond our control; yet it may also stem from within us, but because it is unknown, we cannot control it.
That something can change our lives forever, limit what we do, alter certain activities, or put an end to others altogether. And at that moment, we may feel many things, such as anger, rage, sadness, helplessness, depression and distress. That is the initial reaction. And everyone may react differently. These are things that happen overnight and, despite leading a good life and doing everything that is considered right, they happen all the same.
It might be the case of a health condition that’s hereditary and that you didn’t know you had, but one day, just like any other, that syndrome decides to rear its head after lying dormant your whole life, and it simply prevents you from doing many things; it ties your hands and feet, and it doesn’t say ‘NO’.
Someone I love very much has experienced this in their life, and I know it wasn’t easy to receive that… no, because now it prevents them from doing something they’ve done all their life, such as physical activity.
Life sometimes tells us… now you must change your life, you must be flexible and adapt, even if it means giving up something you love doing. And I’ve always believed that things happen for a reason in this life, and that this reason carries a message for the person experiencing it.
That ‘NO’ is very hard to bear, and I know it is because I feel that person’s pain and see how the absence of certain things in their life saddens them, as they’ve always been part of their journey. Sometimes the path changes direction, and that person must discover the message, the purpose behind that event.
I said to this person: ‘If you’d found out earlier that you had this, you would have been deprived of doing what you love most in life; you were able to do it, and that’s incredibly valuable. I know it will be difficult to adapt and fill that void, very difficult indeed.’
One of the things I believe we come here to learn in life is how to adapt to circumstances, especially when they are beyond our control; to be flexible, to seek out the best strategy for ourselves, and to realise and learn that many things are not within our control, and when that is the case, we simply have to look for the best alternative. The sadness will pass with time and everything will become clearer, and perhaps that answer, that message, will come.
Life is about change and learning, and we continue to learn right up until the day we leave this world, because that is precisely the meaning of life: to have this experience as human beings.
