The Constitution Square is one of the most emblematic squares in the city of Málaga. A public road located in the centre of the city.

It is what was formerly known as the main square, in the historic centre.

It has been a public and political space since the 15th century.

This square arose after the Catholic Monarchs recovered the city from the Muslims.

In ancient times it was called Public Square or Four Streets Square, where from the 16th century onwards the main buildings of the city were built around it, political and economic buildings, such as the main Town Hall, some of which were later moved to other areas.

It has been called Constitution Square since 1812. Although the historical evolution made it be called in many different ways, it returned to what it is called today.

Then in the 19th century it underwent changes, with the demolition of buildings such as the chapel, Saint Lucia and the public prison. The influence of the bourgeoisie came and the first commercial passage in Spain, Heredia Passage, was created.

As part of the modifications, stainless steel plates have been placed in the street showing newspaper front pages from the time of the 1978 constitution.

Then Heredia Passage was reformed and lost its original function. A city in constant movement.

In 2004 it was made pedestrian along with the main street of the city.

Almost every event and festivity, both cultural and religious, has some connection with the Constitution Square.

Its architecture and that of the surrounding buildings are exquisite, including the Consulate House and San Telmo School.

A remarkable work of art is the water fountain in the square, called the Genoa fountain, in Renaissance style. It has been located here since the 17th century, transferred from Italy, and is made entirely of marble.

It was also called the Fountain of Charles V, the emperor who ordered its installation.

It is a fountain that attracts the attention of everyone who passes by, its beauty is incredible. It is made up of 3 cups with marine motifs, you can see Neptune surrounded by dolphins.

This fountain was first located in the park of Malaga. When the Marqués de Larios street was built, it was moved to the Constitution Square. It was placed on one side of the square so that it would not hinder the events and festivities that are so common throughout the year.

It is worth noting that this square is the site of the Malaga fair celebrations and the characteristic Holy Week festivities.

We can access the square from different streets, but the main one is the shopping street Marqués de Larios, passing through an endless number of shops, large shops.

Also from the Cathedral Square, and another possibility is Cisneros Street.

We can see the Montepío de Viñeros building, the oldest building.
We can also find the Doctor Martí clinic where the square's clock is located.

In the square there are three of the most important cafés in the city, La Canasta, Costa Coffee and the famous Malaga Central Coffee. It was the latter that created the names of the 10 types of coffee typical of the capital of Malaga.

Many generations of Malagueños have had this square as a meeting point for a long time and it is worth visiting and admiring. Its architecture is beautiful, both the streets and the buildings and of course the fountain.
