Happy New Year 2024 to all!
The celebration continues. Christmas tree. decorated with Christmas toys, it shines. But a few hundred years ago there were no toys on Christmas trees.
The decoration of the Christmas tree was supposed to symbolize abundance. And abundance is a full year, when there will be no reason to starve. Therefore, the tree was decorated with various foods. Gingerbread, sweets, cookies, and apples were hung on the branches. Everything that a particular family could afford due to their wealth.
Then products made of thin foil began to be added to pastries and sweets. Candles began to be attached to the branches. The Christmas tree with burning candles looked very impressive. But from the point of view of fire safety, it was very dangerous. After all, candles could set fire to a tree at any moment.
Therefore, in the future, real candles were abandoned and replaced with electric garlands of dampers. Now LEDs are used instead of light bulbs. They consume less electricity and are more durable.
The first glass toys were made of thick mirrored glass and were quite heavy (very light compared to modern ones). They cost a lot of money and only rich families could afford to buy them. A set of glass Christmas tree toys could be compared in value with the cost of some large luxury item.
But the opportunity to make toys out of glass allowed the imagination of the masters of making these toys to unfold. Everything could be thought of. And not just balloons, but also various characters from fairy tales and folklore.
Such toys were the most favorite among children. They always look at these toys on the Christmas tree for a long time. There is even such a game - to find a hidden toy in the Christmas tree branches.
And if, with careless handling or simply by a combination of unfortunate circumstances, some glass toy broke, then this was not perceived as something bad. There is a reason to purchase a new toy))
