I’m a flower lover, and I’ve always loved having them in my home. I feel like they fill every corner with joy. It doesn’t matter if they’re a special gift, a bouquet I bought at the market, or a few flowers I used to grow in my garden back in Venezuela.
For a long time, the latter was what I did most often, because flowers became very expensive there. However, I often found myself frustrated: after just a few days, they would start to wilt, and I’d end up feeling like I’d wasted money and effort.
Now that I live in Bogotá, flowers are plentiful and much more affordable, so I always have a beautiful bouquet at home, especially to decorate the little table where I keep my mom’s photo. Thanks to that, over time I discovered a very simple trick that I now use all the time and that really makes a difference.

Soy una amante de las flores y siempre me ha encantado tenerlas en casa. Siento que llenan cualquier rincón de alegría. No importa si son un regalo especial, un ramo que compré en el mercado o unas cuantas flores de las que cultivaba en el jardín de mi casa en Venezuela.
Durante mucho tiempo, esto último fue lo que más hacía, porque las flores se volvieron muy costosas allá. Sin embargo, muchas veces me pasaba algo frustrante: a los pocos días empezaban a marchitarse y yo terminaba pensando que había desperdiciado dinero y esfuerzo.
Ahora que vivo en Bogotá, las flores son abundantes y mucho más asequibles, por lo que siempre tengo un hermoso ramo en casa, especialmente para adornar la mesita donde conservo la foto de mi mamá. Gracias a eso, con el tiempo descubrí un truco muy sencillo que ahora aplico siempre y que realmente hace la diferencia.
Every time I buy flowers for her, before putting them in the vase, I cut a small piece off the stem at an angle. Then, after a few days, I change the water completely and wash and disinfect the vase thoroughly so it’s always very clean. This really helps the flowers absorb water better and stay fresh longer.
I also make a point of removing any leaves that end up submerged in the water. Thanks to a tip from the woman who sells me flowers here in Bogotá, I learned that those leaves encourage bacteria growth and make the water go bad faster. And ever since I started doing this, my flowers stay beautiful for about two weeks—and sometimes even a little longer.
This trick may seem simple, but it’s precisely those little things that end up making our lives easier. And I love sharing this kind of advice because we often assume everyone knows these tips, but that’s not always the case. The reality is that there’s always someone who can benefit from a useful, affordable, and easy-to-implement idea.
Cada vez que compro flores para ella, antes de colocarlas en el florero, corto un pedacito del tallo en diagonal. Luego, a los pocos días, cambio el agua por completo, lavo y desinfecto bien el florero para que siempre esté muy limpio. Esto ayuda muchísimo a que las flores absorban mejor el agua y se mantengan frescas por más tiempo.
También, tengo la costumbre de quitar las hojas que quedan sumergidas en el agua. Gracias al consejo de la señora que me vende las flores aquí en Bogotá, aprendí que esas hojas ayudan a que aparezcan bacterias y hacen que el agua se ensucie más rápido. Y desde que empecé a hacerlo, mis flores permanecen bonitas durante unos quince días, e incluso un poco más.
Este truco puede parecer sencillo, pero son justamente esas pequeñas cosas las que terminan facilitándonos la vida. Y me encanta compartir este tipo de consejos porque muchas veces creemos que todo el mundo los conoce, y no siempre es así. La realidad es que siempre hay alguien que puede beneficiarse de una idea útil, económica y fácil de poner en práctica.
